Boniek offers cautious verdict on Polish clubs in Europe

Zbigniew Boniek has delivered a concise but telling assessment of Polish clubs after the first matches of the third qualifying round in European competition, and his verdict reflected the wider mood: limited encouragement, with plenty still unresolved.

The strongest impression came from Jagiellonia, who recovered from an early setback to beat Rangers FC at home. Kajetan Szmyt proved decisive, scoring both goals for the hosts in what was the standout result among the Polish sides.

Mixed night for Ekstraklasa clubs

Elsewhere, the picture was far less convincing. Lech Poznań did win against Klaksvik, but the narrow margin left room for frustration rather than celebration. Raków Częstochowa were held to a goalless draw by Hammarby, while GKS Katowice were beaten by Hapoel Tel Aviv and now face another recovery mission in front of their own supporters.

That came after Górnik Zabrze had already lost away to Ferencvaros, adding to a difficult spell for Polish teams in Europe. The reaction from commentators and observers was therefore unsurprisingly critical, particularly when it came to Lech and Raków.

Boniek's brief but clear message

Boniek, the former president of the Polish FA, summed up the situation in a short social media post. His opening line was pointed: Lech had dropped too deep, while GKS Katowice had disappointed.

There was more encouragement in his view of the other ties, but not enough to suggest comfort. He described Jagiellonia's advantage as valuable, while warning that the return leg would be difficult. On Raków, he admitted he had expected them to cope better, though he still sees that tie as open. His view on Górnik was similarly balanced: there is still a chance to turn things around in Zabrze, even if the task is complicated.

Jagiellonia set the standard

If there was one Polish team to emerge with real credit, it was Jagiellonia. Their comeback against Rangers FC gave them a lead to protect and offered a reminder that, even on a generally underwhelming week, a strong home performance can shift the tone.

That does not mean the job is done. Boniek's warning about the second leg underlined the broader theme of this round: no Polish side can afford complacency, and even the most promising result still carries risk.

Attention turns to the return legs

The next set of matches will now define whether this week is remembered as a wobble or the start of a wider problem. GKS Katowice are first up, with their home meeting against Hapoel Tel Aviv scheduled for Wednesday, 12 August at Nowa Bukowa. A day later, Raków, Górnik, Lech and Jagiellonia all play their return fixtures.

For now, Boniek's summary feels close to the mark: some hope, some disappointment, and very little certainty. Jagiellonia have given Polish football a lift, but the rest still have work to do.
