Lech collapse draws Europe-wide reaction after Aarhus exit

Lech Poznań’s exit from the Champions League qualifiers has become a story well beyond Poland after the Ekstraklasa side let a commanding first-leg advantage slip against Aarhus and then went out on penalties.

A collapse that travelled across Europe

Lech had put themselves in a strong position by winning the opening game 4:1, leaving the team coached by Niels Frederiksen seemingly on course for the third qualifying round. Instead, the return leg in Poznań turned into a damaging reversal as Aarhus recovered the deficit and eventually progressed after the shootout.

The scale of that turnaround has ensured the tie has been widely discussed in foreign media. The reaction has not focused only on Aarhus advancing, but also on the magnitude of Lech’s failure to finish the job from such a favourable position.

How foreign outlets framed the result

Coverage from outside Poland underlined just how surprising the outcome was viewed elsewhere. Bosnian outlet klix.ba described the comeback as a near-miraculous event in Champions League qualifying and suggested it would be remembered as one of the biggest surprises in the competition’s preliminary rounds.

In Ukraine, sport.ua labelled it a huge defeat for Lech while highlighting Aarhus’ comeback. Swedish publication fotbollskanalen.se also focused on the dramatic swing in the tie, portraying Lech’s home performance as a collapse after appearing to be in complete control before the second leg.

Austrian newspaper Krone took perhaps the harshest line, concentrating on the embarrassment for the Polish champions rather than solely on Aarhus’ achievement. Its assessment was that Lech had every reason to think about the next round after the first match, only for the home return to become one of the most painful failures of the campaign.

What comes next for Lech

Although the Champions League route is over, Lech’s European campaign continues. The club will now switch its focus to the fight for a place in the league phase of either the Europa League or the Conference League.

The next opponent will be KI Klaksvik of the Faroe Islands, a club with recent European pedigree after playing in the Conference League group stage in the 2023/24 season. The two matches are scheduled for 6 and 13 August, with the first leg to be played in Poznań.

Aarhus move on, Lech must respond

For Aarhus, the reward is a meeting with Sabah Baku, the champions of Azerbaijan. That tie also carries a Polish link, with Tymoteusz Puchacz on Sabah’s books.

For Lech, however, the immediate challenge is different. After a result that has triggered criticism at home and abroad, the task now is to recover quickly and ensure this setback does not define the rest of their European season.
