Poland move above Czechia in UEFA ranking after Lech win

Poland climbed into 10th place in the UEFA ranking after Lech Poznań sealed progress to the play-off round in Europe, edging the country ahead of Czechia in a race that could carry major significance for future Champions League access.

Lech result gives Poland a timely lift

Lech are the last Polish side to book a place in the play-off phase so far, doing so in emphatic fashion against KI Klaksvik. The Polish champions won 5-0 on Friday night and completed a 6-0 aggregate victory, a result that helped drive Poland’s latest rise in the coefficient table.

That outcome matters beyond one club’s campaign. Poland collected 0.800 UEFA ranking points across the week and moved above the Czechs by a margin of 0.100. It is a narrow advantage, but one that supporters in Poland had been hoping to see as the European qualifying rounds continue.

Why 10th place matters

The battle for 10th is especially important because that position would guarantee the domestic champion of that country a direct place in the league phase of the Champions League in the 2028/29 season.

For now, Czechia remain Poland’s main rival in that contest. This week, the Czechs added 0.200 points, helped by FK Jablonec’s 2-1 win over RFS. Poland, however, made the bigger move and now sit just ahead.

Four Polish clubs still in the hunt

Poland began the European qualifying campaign with five representatives. That number has now dropped to four after GKS Katowice were eliminated from the Conference League over two legs against Hapoel Tel Aviv.

Even so, there is still a realistic chance of a strong Polish presence in the league phases. Lech Poznań and Jagiellonia Białystok are fighting for places in the Europa League league phase, while Górnik Zabrze and Raków Częstochowa remain in contention for the Conference League.

On that basis, Poland can realistically think about sending three teams into the league phases.

The wider picture in the Polish-Czech race

There is still a long way to go, and Czechia have important advantages of their own. Slavia Prague are already assured of a place in the Champions League league phase, while Sparta Prague are guaranteed to feature in the Europa League.

Elsewhere, Viktoria Plzen are still competing for a Europa League place against Crvena Zvezda. In the Conference League play-offs, Hradec Kralove will face Panathinaikos, while Jablonec have been paired with Glasgow Rangers.

The next round of play-off matches in the Europa League and Conference League is scheduled for 20 and 27 August. By then, Poland’s push to stay in the top 10 of the UEFA ranking will be under even sharper focus.
