Manchester City seek new Rodri deal amid Real Madrid interest

Manchester City are hopeful of tying Rodri to a new contract, though the Premier League club are also preparing for serious interest from Real Madrid after the midfielder’s standout World Cup with Spain.

City pushing for clarity over Rodri future

Rodri remains in talks with City over fresh terms, with the club optimistic an agreement can still be reached. His current contract is due to expire in June 2027, and City have had a new deal on the table for some time.

Even so, the situation has become more complicated as interest grows around one of the club’s most important players. City are not only aware of Real Madrid’s position but also of the possibility that other leading European sides could test the waters.

Real Madrid change stance after Spain displays

Real Madrid are understood to have shifted from an earlier lack of interest in Rodri following his performances for Spain during their successful World Cup campaign. The midfielder captained his country and was awarded the Golden Ball as the tournament’s best player, elevating his profile even further.

That form appears to have strengthened Madrid’s conviction that Rodri could be a target, with the Spanish club now weighing up an offer. His displays over the summer also helped ease concerns about his durability after two seasons disrupted by injuries.

Rodri is, however, set to undergo surgery on a back injury after returning to England from North America, adding another layer to the discussion around his immediate future.

Earlier this year, Rodri suggested that a move to Real Madrid could not be dismissed simply because of his previous spell with Atlético Madrid. Real Madrid’s interest may encourage further movement elsewhere in the market. Barcelona are mentioned as a possible suitor after Frenkie de Jong’s medial collateral ligament injury ruled him out for months, while Paris Saint-Germain are also known admirers of Rodri.

Madrid’s ability to act could depend on their wider transfer business. The club may need to raise funds, particularly if they complete an expected move for Yan Diomande from RB Leipzig for a fee reported to be well above €100m. That could place Aurélien Tchouaméni’s future under scrutiny, even though the France midfielder is thought to have agreed a new contract that has yet to be announced.

Manchester United are said to retain an interest in Tchouaméni, while Eduardo Camavinga is also on their radar, illustrating how a potential move for Rodri could have consequences beyond City and Madrid alone.
