Neymar confirms Brazil retirement after World Cup exit

Neymar has confirmed that his international career with Brazil is over, bringing an end to speculation that followed the team’s World Cup exit and his emotional reaction after the defeat to Norway in the last 16.

Selection debate followed him into the tournament

When Carlo Ancelotti named Neymar in Brazil’s squad for this year’s World Cup, the decision drew criticism. Many supporters questioned why the veteran forward had been included, with some arguing that other attacking players had done more to merit a place. Joao Pedro was among the names mentioned in that discussion.

Neymar, now 34, was not ready to play at the start of the tournament. He eventually featured in two matches, but his involvement was limited and closely scrutinised throughout.

Two appearances and an emotional exit

His first outing came in the group-stage match against Scotland, when he entered the game after the result had effectively been settled at 3-0. He then appeared in Brazil’s round-of-16 meeting with Norway, coming on while the score was still 0-0.

That match would prove decisive. Neymar did score a late penalty, but Brazil were beaten 2-1 and eliminated from the competition. After the final whistle, he did not hide his tears, and the immediate feeling among supporters and pundits was that they had seen his final appearance for the national team.

Neymar makes his decision clear

The player has now confirmed that view himself in a brief statement carried by Brazilian outlet Globo.

“My time with the national team has come to an end. I made history, I was very happy, I gave my heart and my life, I always fought for the Selecao, but now I no longer want that.”

It is a stark message from one of the defining figures of Brazil’s modern era, and it closes the door on any immediate prospect of a return.

A Brazil career of records, but mixed tournament fortune

Neymar’s international career ends with major individual distinction. In 130 appearances for Brazil, he scored 80 goals, making him the country’s all-time leading scorer.

Yet the team honours did not fully match that personal output. Aside from winning the Confederations Cup and Olympic gold, he did not collect another major trophy with the senior national side. He also finished without a World Cup medal, while injury ruled him out of Brazil’s victorious Copa America campaign in 2019.

That leaves a complicated legacy: a player of enormous influence and historic numbers, but one whose time with Brazil will also be remembered for the sense that the biggest prizes remained just out of reach.
