PSG tower over Ligue 1 as rivals battle to stay afloat
PSG remain the benchmark in France, but the wider Ligue 1 picture is defined by survival as much as ambition. For many clubs, balancing the books now matters as much as results.

Paris Saint-Germain head into the new Ligue 1 season as the clear standard-bearers, but the wider picture in France is far less about a title race and far more about survival. While PSG sit atop the domestic landscape after back-to-back Champions League triumphs, many of their rivals are wrestling with financial pressure, squad sales and the growing reality that development and trading may matter more than competing with Paris.
PSG’s dominance has reshaped the league
The sense of opportunity that briefly followed Kylian Mbappé’s move to Real Madrid has faded. Clubs such as Marseille, Monaco and Lille might once have viewed that departure as a chance to close the gap, but PSG’s continued success has only reinforced the scale of the challenge.
In that context, ambition elsewhere in Ligue 1 has become more modest. For many clubs, the immediate objective is not to overhaul PSG but to remain stable enough to function, protect their finances and continue producing players attractive to wealthier leagues, particularly the Premier League.
Marseille’s problems go beyond the pitch
Marseille are perhaps the clearest example of that tension between sporting aspiration and financial necessity. The club avoided a European ban and will play in the Europa League this season, but Uefa’s message was unmistakable: correct the financial imbalance or face serious consequences.
There has also been change on the bench. Bruno Génésio has arrived after Habib Beye’s spell in charge, following Roberto De Zerbi’s departure to Tottenham. Yet Marseille’s room for manoeuvre has been severely restricted by Uefa and the DNCG, French football’s financial watchdog. The club have not made a single signing, even as several established names have left on permanent deals.
The handling of Pierre-Emile Højbjerg underlined the strain. After he turned down a move to Newcastle, he was stripped of the captaincy for a friendly against Atlético Madrid. Génésio made clear the decision was not his own, a revealing detail in a club where financial priorities currently appear to outweigh football ones.
Monaco and others are cutting costs
Marseille are not alone. Monaco, with their wage bill under supervision, have also spent the summer trying to create savings. Maghnes Akliouche’s move to PSG had long been anticipated, while further departures could still follow. The sale of Aladji Bamba to Newcastle has at least given the club more flexibility as they continue to reduce costs and raise funds.
This is increasingly the model across Ligue 1. Broadcasting income no longer provides the same foundation, leaving French clubs more reliant on transfer revenue. In practical terms, that means hoping Premier League sides continue to spend heavily on emerging talent.
The Premier League pull is stronger than ever
The churn of talent out of France has become even more pronounced. Bamba had made only a limited number of league appearances before Newcastle moved for him. Liverpool acted quickly to sign Jérémy Jacquet, while Mamadou Sangaré’s rise at Lens was enough to persuade Brentford to invest.
Even clubs in healthier positions are struggling to resist that pull. Lens, despite the appeal of Champions League football, have seen key figures leave. Pierre Sage has crossed to Crystal Palace, while Sangaré and several players central to last season’s success have also moved on.
The result is a league with one overwhelming superpower and a chasing pack forced into compromise. PSG may be the best team in Europe, but the defining story across much of Ligue 1 is not one of pursuit. It is one of endurance.
