Chelsea set Enzo Fernández deadline as City hold firm on Rodri

Chelsea have set a firm Friday deadline for any club hoping to sign Enzo Fernández, as Manchester City continue to resist Barcelona’s attempts to prise Rodri away from the Premier League champions.

The London club’s position is clear: if an official offer matching their £120m valuation does not arrive by 5pm on Friday, Fernández will stay at Stamford Bridge. City are among the clubs linked with the Argentina midfielder, who has been identified as a potential replacement for Rodri.

Chelsea’s stance reflects a desire for certainty late in the window. The club believe interested parties have had ample time to formalise their interest and are unwilling to allow the situation to drift beyond their deadline.

Fernández’s profile helps explain Chelsea’s valuation. He is the club captain and a World Cup winner, bringing leadership as well as quality in midfield.

Barcelona’s second Rodri bid rejected

City have already turned down Barcelona’s second offer for Rodri, with the latest proposal worth around €60m (£51m). That improved on an initial bid of €45m, but it still fell short of City’s expectations.

It is understood City want around £60m to £65m for the Spain midfielder. Rodri remains one of the most decorated and influential players in the squad, having captained Spain to World Cup success and previously won the Ballon d’Or.

Even so, the direction of travel appears increasingly clear. Rodri is said to prefer a move to Barcelona, and City accept that a transfer to Camp Nou is close to inevitable. That has pushed Fernández into focus as a possible successor in Enzo Maresca’s side.

City reshape midfield options

City may also look to create room financially through an outgoing deal for Tijjani Reijnders. Talks with Al-Qadsiah are advanced over a package worth around €60m for the Dutch midfielder, who only arrived last summer.

That potential sale would help City as they weigh up how best to respond if Rodri’s departure is completed. The midfield picture is therefore moving on several fronts at once, with Barcelona, Chelsea and Al-Qadsiah all part of a developing chain.

Doku commits to the club

Amid the uncertainty around other members of the squad, Jérémy Doku has committed his future to City by signing a contract extension through to 2031.

“With Enzo [Maresca] here now I am really excited about the new season. His style of football is the kind we love, so that’s exciting for the players.

“The City fans are also a huge reason I have signed this new contract. I feel their love and support, and it means the world to me. I want to focus of bringing them the success they deserve.”

For City, that offers at least one note of stability during a period in which the futures of key midfielders remain under scrutiny.
