Lionel Messi retires from Argentina after 207 caps

Lionel Messi has announced his retirement from international football, bringing down the curtain on one of Argentina’s greatest careers after 207 caps. The 39-year-old said the decision was painful, but described it as the right moment to step away after a journey that delivered the World Cup, two Copa América titles and years at the centre of the national team.

A defining Argentina career comes to an end

Messi made his senior debut for Argentina in 2005 and went on to become the defining figure of a generation. His final appearance came in the World Cup final, capping an international career that included triumph at the 2022 World Cup as well as runner-up finishes this summer and in 2014.

He also helped Argentina win two Copa América titles, adding further weight to a legacy that had long been measured not only by individual brilliance but by what he could achieve in the national shirt.

Messi explains a painful decision

In his statement, Messi said retirement was a choice that had hurt him deeply, while stressing that he had always given everything for Argentina. He said he had fought for the shirt throughout his career and had always tried to bring joy to supporters and make them proud through football.

Messi also said the time had come because he had nothing left to give and because younger players deserved their opportunity. The tone of the statement reflected both pride in what had been achieved and the emotional weight of leaving the national team behind.

World Cup final and family loss shaped the timing

Messi said he had written his retirement statement on 21 July, two days after the World Cup final. He added that the death of his father, Jorge, earlier in August confirmed for him that it was the right time to make the announcement public and formally end his Argentina career.

After his father’s death, Messi had already acknowledged doubts about how much longer he would continue playing. He also revealed how much the World Cup final defeat by Spain had taken out of him physically, admitting he had tried to push beyond his limits but could not continue.

A second farewell to international football

This is not the first time Messi has stepped away from Argentina duty. He initially retired from international football in 2016 after a Copa final defeat in which he missed a penalty in the shootout. That retirement did not last, and he returned to help Argentina reach the 2018 World Cup finals.

This time, however, the announcement has been made with immediate effect and appears to close the chapter for good. Messi leaves Argentina as a World Cup winner, a multiple Copa América champion and one of the most influential players in the country’s football history.

Still making an impact at club level

Although his international career is over, Messi remains active with Inter Miami, where his contract runs to 2028. Last Saturday he scored four goals in a Major League Soccer match for the first time, inspiring a 7-1 win over CF Montreal.

That form underlines that while Argentina will no longer have him available, Messi’s playing career is not yet finished. What has ended is his long association with the national team, a bond he made clear he will always cherish despite the pain of saying goodbye.
