A problem Chelsea could no longer ignore

Why Sánchez lost the trust

The immediate trigger was Robert Sánchez’s display in Chelsea’s 3-2 win over Fulham last Monday. Although Chelsea won, the performance appears to have convinced the club that they could not continue as they were if they wanted to compete at the top end.

That is what makes the call notable. Xabi Alonso has shown a willingness to act decisively, and the choice to move on from Sánchez suggests he is prepared to make uncomfortable decisions quickly. For supporters, the frustration may be that this conclusion has taken so long to reach.

Sánchez had already survived previous changes around him. Mauricio Pochettino turned to Djordje Petrovic during the 2023-24 season, only for Enzo Maresca to restore Sánchez after taking charge in the summer of 2024. Filip Jörgensen also had opportunities to establish himself, but he did not fully convince and has since left the club.

The club’s faith in Penders was one reason they had not moved for other high-profile goalkeepers in recent windows.
