Lamine Yamal has revealed the message Lionel Messi gave him after Spain’s World Cup final win over Argentina, describing the brief exchange as something he will value as highly as the medal he collected with his national team.

Spain and Argentina shared a symbolic moment

Spain returned from this year’s World Cup as champions for the second time in their history after beating Argentina 1-0 after extra time in the final. Ferran Torres scored the decisive goal in a match that also carried a wider sense of symbolism.

Messi remains Yamal’s reference point

Yamal has never hidden the regard he has for Messi. He described the Argentine as the best player in history and said he had simply wanted to show his respect after the match.

“He is the best player in history. I have always admired him. After the match, I showed him my respect,” Yamal said.

The connection between the two has often been revisited in recent years, not least because of the well-known UNICEF and Barcelona calendar photograph showing Messi bathing a five-month-old Yamal. As Yamal’s profile has risen, that image has taken on even greater resonance.

Mutual respect before and after the final

Messi had also spoken warmly about Yamal before the final, praising both his talent and the scale of his emergence at such a young age.

“He is an excellent footballer, a global star. He is 19 and has his whole career ahead of him,” Messi said before the final.

In tournament terms, Messi was the more productive of the two. He finished the World Cup with eight goals and four assists, second only to Kylian Mbappe in the scoring charts, while Yamal ended the competition with one goal.

Even so, the lasting image from the final may not be limited to Spain lifting the trophy. It may also be the passing of a few words between one of football’s greatest-ever players and a teenager many believe could shape the next era.
