Arsenal explore move for Vinícius Júnior from Real Madrid

Arsenal are exploring a surprise move for Vinícius Júnior, with the club making inquiries about the Real Madrid forward as Mikel Arteta looks to add another high-profile attacker to his squad.

The Brazil international has one year remaining on his contract at the Bernabéu, a situation that has placed fresh attention on his future. Arsenal’s interest is understood to be at an early stage, but the fact they have made an approach underlines the scale of their ambition.

Arteta is said to want a marquee signing as Arsenal build on winning their first Premier League title in more than two decades. Vinícius would clearly fall into that category, given his standing in the game and his output last season for club and country.

The 26-year-old scored 22 goals for Real Madrid last season and added four for Brazil at the World Cup, numbers that help explain why Arsenal are willing to explore whether a deal is possible.

Uncertainty at Real Madrid after Mourinho return

Vinícius’s position in Madrid appears less settled following José Mourinho’s return as manager. With the forward entering the final year of his deal, Real could face a significant decision: retain him and risk losing him for nothing later, or consider a sale now.

Mourinho has signed a three-year contract at the Bernabéu, but his relationship with Vinícius has already come under scrutiny because of comments linked to an incident during a Champions League tie in February.

At the time, Mourinho was managing Benfica when Vinícius accused Gianluca Prestianni of racially abusing him. Mourinho said that “something happens, always” in matches involving Vinícius. Prestianni was later banned for six matches after admitting he had used homophobic language towards the Real forward.

Vinícius is not the only attacking name under consideration as Arsenal reshape their options in the final third. Atlético Madrid’s Julián Álvarez, RB Leipzig’s Yan Diomande and Paris Saint-Germain’s Bradley Barcola are also on the club’s radar.

Arsenal have already strengthened in attack with the signing of Christos Tzolis from Club Brugge in a deal worth £34m. The club had also looked at Morgan Rogers, but were not prepared to go beyond £80m for the England international, who has since joined Chelsea in a British record £117m move.

Tzolis became Arsenal’s third addition after Piero Hincapié made his temporary move permanent and goalkeeper Illan Meslier arrived after leaving Leeds at the end of his contract.

Guimarães also in Arsenal’s thinking

Arsenal’s recruitment work is not limited to the forward line. Bruno Guimarães is another player they are keen on, although Newcastle manager Eddie Howe has made clear he does not want to lose one of his key figures.

“We don’t want to lose our best players,” Howe said after Newcastle’s 1-1 pre-season draw at Gateshead on Saturday. “I’ve spoken to him as I would do. Bruno is just a fantastic person. We’ve had some really good conversations, both before the World Cup, during the World Cup and after the World Cup.

“I don’t know what’s going to happen with Bruno’s future. That’s for other people to speculate about.”

For now, Arsenal’s interest in Vinícius remains at a formative stage. But even an initial approach signals that Arteta and the club are looking at the very top end of the market as they plan their next step.
