Dani Olmo rejects Roberto Ayala apology after World Cup final

Dani Olmo has rejected Roberto Ayala’s apology following the altercation that overshadowed the World Cup final between Spain and Argentina, insisting the former defender’s explanation does not reflect genuine remorse.

That explanation has not satisfied the Spain international. Speaking in comments cited by klix.ba, Olmo made clear he does not accept the apology.

“Someone who says he is sorry, while justifying his action as a response to someone’s words, most likely does not feel true remorse,” Olmo said, adding that what defines people is not their mistakes alone, but the courage to admit them with humility.

Olmo also broadened the issue beyond the incident itself, framing it as a question of conduct and example. The Barcelona player said that whenever he steps onto the pitch, he wants his children, family, supporters and people from his hometown of Terrassa to feel proud not only of how his team competes and wins, but above all of how it behaves.

He added that footballers serve as role models for children and future generations, and that such visibility carries major responsibility.

Key role in Spain’s run

Olmo’s prominence in the aftermath of the final reflects the importance of his role throughout Spain’s campaign. He was a key figure for de la Fuente’s side in the knockout rounds and started every one of those matches.

In the semi-final against France, he provided the assist for Spain’s second goal. That was his second assist of the tournament, after also setting up Mikel Oyarzabal in the group-stage match against Saudi Arabia.
