Lech hammered after AGF collapse ends Champions League bid

Lech Poznań’s exit from the second round of Champions League qualifying prompted a wave of sharp criticism after the Polish champions squandered a commanding first-leg advantage against Aarhus GF and were eventually eliminated on penalties.

A tie that slipped away in Poznań

Lech had put themselves in a strong position by winning the first match 4-1 away from home, and with 37,000 supporters in the stands in Poznań, the return leg appeared to offer a clear route into the next round.

Instead, the evening turned into a damaging collapse. Lech went into the break trailing by one goal, and the pressure only increased after Aarhus GF added two more in the second half. The Danish side even pushed for another goal that would have sealed progress inside normal time.

Lech also had chances to calm the tie but failed to take them. In extra time, Filip Jagiełło found the net, only for Aarhus GF to respond again. With nothing separating the teams by the end of extra time, the contest went to penalties, where the Danish champions won 4-3.

Experts deliver a brutal verdict

The reaction on X was immediate and unforgiving. Much of the criticism focused not only on the scale of the collapse, but on the manner of Lech’s performance after holding such a significant advantage from the first leg.

Sebastian Chabiniak of Eleven Sports described the result as an extraordinary embarrassment, pointing to individual displays from Mateusz Lis and Mikael Ishak while noting that a meeting with AEK in the next stage would now not happen.

Piotr Wąsowski of Weszło highlighted Lech’s defensive problems during the match itself, while Konrad Marzec of Super Express wrote that the result had left him so deflated he had no interest in immediate post-match analysis or discussion about other European competitions.

Michał Zachodny of TVP Sport called it a compromising collapse, arguing that Lech played for too long without fully recognising the danger. He also praised Aarhus GF for their ambition and mentality. Tomasz Hatta of igol.pl questioned the current level of Mateusz Lis, suggesting the goalkeeper looked far from his previous standard.

From Champions League hopes to frustration

The sense of disappointment was heightened by how quickly expectations had shifted. Many had already begun looking ahead to possible opponents in later rounds, only for Lech’s Champions League hopes to disappear in dramatic fashion.

Krzysztof Sędzicki of WP SportoweFakty wrote that supporters had at least been allowed to dream for a week, but suggested the competition remains painfully out of reach for Polish clubs. Rafał Smoliński, also of WP SportoweFakty, went even further, insisting the result should not be described merely as shameful but as a full-blown humiliation.

Elsewhere, Tomasz Sikora wrote that Polish fans were left to support clubs from neighbouring Lithuania and Slovakia in the next round, while Canal+ Sport’s Michał Mitrut admitted he could not understand what had happened to Lech over the course of a single week.

A result that will linger

For Lech, the sporting damage is obvious: the club is out of the race for the Champions League. But the wider impact may be the scrutiny that now follows a team that seemed in complete control of the tie and still failed to finish the job.

The online reaction captured the scale of that shock. This was not treated as a narrow miss or an unfortunate exit. Among commentators and supporters alike, it was seen as a major failure — one that will be difficult for Lech Poznań to shake off quickly.
