Hungarian media frame Gornik test before Ferencvaros tie

Hungarian coverage ahead of Ferencvaros' Europa League qualifying meeting with Gornik Zabrze has painted the Polish side as a club of deep tradition, recent momentum and strong support, with Lukas Podolski presented as a central figure in its current rebuild.

Gornik switch focus to Europa League qualifying

Gornik arrive in the third round of Europa League qualification after dropping out of the Champions League qualifiers following their defeat to Fenerbahce in the second round. Their next opponents, Ferencvaros, have already come through ties against Vojvodina and Twente, and the Hungarian side may be viewed as favourites given their greater recent European experience and stronger club ranking.

That has not stopped media in Hungary from treating the tie seriously. Origo.hu introduced Gornik as a difficult opponent for Ferencvaros, stressing both the scale of the club’s history and the atmosphere generated by its supporters.

History and recent success highlighted

The Hungarian report focused heavily on Gornik’s status as a 14-time Polish champion, while noting that the club’s most successful periods came mainly in the 1960s and 1980s. It also pointed to the long wait for major silverware that ended with this year’s Polish Cup triumph, described as the club’s first in that competition since the 1971/72 season.

Gornik’s runners-up finish in Poland was also underlined as their best league result since the 1990/91 campaign. In European terms, Origo.hu referenced the club’s run to the Cup Winners’ Cup final in the 1969/70 season against Manchester City, as well as a notable European Cup campaign two years earlier that ended in a narrow defeat to eventual winners Manchester United.

Podolski at the centre of the story

Podolski was the standout name in the Hungarian portrayal of Gornik. The former Germany international and World Cup winner was described not simply as a famous former player, but as someone still deeply tied to the club and involved in its development as majority owner.

That personal connection was a major theme. Hungarian readers were reminded that Podolski, born in Poland and raised in Germany, had long supported Gornik and had promised his grandmother that he would one day play for the club from Zabrze.

Origo.hu also identified head coach Michal Gasparik and captain Erik Janza as key figures. Gasparik’s immediate impact was noted after he led the team to a domestic cup win and a second-place league finish in his first season. Janza, meanwhile, was presented as an experienced presence who has been at the club since 2019 and has earned 32 caps for Slovenia.

Squad changes and early-season form

The Hungarian assessment also pointed to experience elsewhere in Gornik’s squad, naming Kacper Urbanski, Pawel Bochniewicz, Maksym Chlan, Lukas Sadilek, Michal Sacek and Erik Prekop among players with international backgrounds. At the same time, it noted that summer changes have altered the make-up of the team that enjoyed success last season, with Patrik Hellebrand, Lukas Ambros and Marcel Lubik among those to leave.

Recent results were also part of the picture. Ferencvaros’ opponents have already lost to Fenerbahce in Europe, were beaten by Lech Poznan in the Polish Super Cup, and opened their Ekstraklasa campaign with a win over Slask Wroclaw. Their away match against Korona Kielce in the second round of league fixtures was postponed.

For all Ferencvaros’ pedigree and momentum in qualifying, the tone from Hungary suggests there is no sense of complacency. Gornik may not carry the same modern European profile, but their history, support and recent domestic rise have clearly been noticed in Budapest.
