Liverpool surrender two-goal lead in defeat to Leeds

Liverpool's final outing of their United States tour ended in frustration as a commanding first-half display gave way to a dramatic defeat against Leeds United in Chicago. Andoni Iraola's side were two goals ahead at the interval, only for Leeds to produce a sharp second-half turnaround and leave Liverpool with plenty to assess before the final stretch of pre-season.

Liverpool in control before the break

For much of the opening half, Liverpool looked comfortable and purposeful. They moved in front early when Dominik Szoboszlai's corner was helped on by Milos Kerkez, allowing Luke Chambers to finish and put Iraola's team ahead.

Leeds did threaten, and Lucas Nmecha came close to an equaliser, but Giorgi Mamardashvilli produced an important save to preserve Liverpool's advantage.

Liverpool then doubled their lead through Florian Wirtz, who marked his return with a goal. The move itself was one of the standout moments of the first half, with Trey Nyoni and Jeremie Frimpong both heavily involved in an attack that underlined Liverpool's quality in possession.

Leeds change the game after half-time

The pattern shifted after the interval. Leeds introduced stronger attacking options, including Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Harry Wilson, and the contest quickly swung in their favour.

Brenden Aaronson reduced the deficit after capitalising on a mistake from Kerkez, giving Leeds the foothold they needed. From there, the momentum was firmly with them.

Calvert-Lewin then brought Leeds level from a long throw delivered by Ethan Ampadu, and the comeback was completed moments later when Sean Longstaff found the net with a scruffy finish. Leeds were not done there, with Calvert-Lewin adding his second goal in similar fashion to his first to complete the turnaround.

A warning before the season begins

From Liverpool's perspective, the match offered two very different pictures. The first half featured fluency, control and some encouraging individual contributions, particularly in the move that led to Wirtz's goal. The second half, however, exposed a vulnerability once Leeds increased the intensity and began to attack with greater conviction.

For Leeds, the comeback was an impressive response and a reminder of the impact their changes made after the break. Turning a two-goal deficit into victory in such a short spell gave them a strong finish to the tour.

Both teams now head back to England for the final phase of their pre-season work, with the start of the new campaign less than three weeks away. Liverpool will feel they showed enough in the first half to take encouragement, but the collapse after the interval ensured this was a sobering end to the trip.
