Terry Dyson, Tottenham Double winner, dies aged 91
Tottenham have announced the death of former winger Terry Dyson at the age of 91. He remains the only Spurs player to score a hat-trick against Arsenal.

Tottenham have announced the death of former winger Terry Dyson at the age of 91, paying tribute to a player they described as a key figure in one of the club’s most celebrated teams. Dyson was part of the Spurs side that won the Double in 1961 and remains a distinctive figure in the club’s history.
A major figure in Tottenham’s golden era
Dyson made 209 appearances and scored 55 goals during a 10-year spell with Tottenham. The club said it was extremely saddened by the news and offered condolences to his family and friends.
His place in Spurs folklore was secured by his role in Bill Nicholson’s 1960-61 team, the first English side in the 20th century to complete the First Division and FA Cup Double. Tottenham also highlighted that Dyson scored in the FA Cup Final, underlining his contribution to that landmark campaign.
European success and derby history
While Dyson’s achievements in the Double season ensured his place in club history, another of his standout contributions came two years later on the European stage. He scored twice in Tottenham’s victory over Atlético Madrid as Spurs won the European Cup Winners’ Cup in 1963.
He also holds a unique place in the north London derby record books. Dyson remains the only Tottenham player to score a hat-trick against Arsenal, a feat he achieved at the beginning of the 1961-62 season.
A rare memory that endured
In 2020, Dyson reflected on that derby hat-trick and admitted one of the goals came in controversial fashion, saying the ball struck his hand before he finished and that Arsenal’s players protested. He also recalled the variety of the three goals — one with his head, one with his left foot and one with his right — and described the hat-trick as a perfect one.
Dyson also remembered the understated praise he received from Nicholson, whose exacting standards were well known. According to Dyson, a simple “well done” from the Spurs manager carried real weight.
Career beyond Spurs
After his distinguished time at Tottenham, Dyson went on to play for Fulham, Colchester and Guildford. But it is his contribution in white that will define his legacy most strongly: a winger central to a historic side, a European trophy winner and the only Spurs player to score a north London derby hat-trick.
