Youri Tielemans explains surprise move to Manchester United

Youri Tielemans has said he did not expect to leave Aston Villa this summer, with the midfielder describing his move to Manchester United as a surprise after previous contact with the club had led nowhere.

A move that developed quietly

In his first interview since joining United, Tielemans explained that he had spoken with the club on two earlier occasions, but neither discussion resulted in a transfer. That history meant he approached the latest interest with caution rather than certainty.

That is part of why his switch to Manchester United has attracted attention. Tielemans is an established top-flight midfielder with years of experience in England, and United moved decisively to bring him in from Villa.

He also made clear that he did not feel the chance to join a club of United’s stature had passed him by. In his view, Villa achieved significant things during his spell there, including winning the Europa League, but he also recognised that Manchester United operate at a different level in the game’s hierarchy.

Belgium focus remained central

Tielemans said his concentration during the summer was on the World Cup with Belgium, where he captained his country during the tournament. That campaign included the match against the USA after Folarin Balogun’s red card was suspended.

Rather than becoming consumed by transfer speculation, Tielemans presented himself as a player intent on controlling only what he could: his form, his fitness and his contribution on the international stage. The transfer, he suggested, was something that could happen in the background while he remained fixed on football.

Optimism over Manchester United future

Now at Old Trafford, Tielemans has spoken positively about the environment he is joining. He pointed to what he sees as a strong feeling around Manchester United and said he hopes the partnership can produce a successful story.

For United, the signing brings proven Premier League experience and a player who believes he is arriving at the right moment.
