Porto beat Aston Villa as Polish defenders start in friendly

FC Porto’s pre-season meeting with Aston Villa offered a notable Polish subplot, with Jan Bednarek, Jakub Kiwior and Matty Cash all named in the starting line-ups. Porto won the friendly at Estadio do Dragao, while Oskar Pietuszewski was again unavailable because of injury.

Polish presence stands out in Porto and Villa friendly

The game brought together two clubs preparing for important starts to the new campaign. Porto are gearing up to defend the Portuguese league title they won last season, ending a three-year wait to be crowned champions. Aston Villa, meanwhile, arrive with momentum of their own after winning the Europa League and finishing fourth in the Premier League.

For Polish supporters, the main point of interest was the defensive cast on show. Bednarek and Kiwior both started for Porto, with Cash lining up for Villa. That meant almost the entire Poland back line was on the pitch from the opening whistle.

Porto’s recent recruitment has strengthened the Polish connection at the club. Bednarek and Kiwior joined the Portuguese champions during the summer transfer window, and the group later grew with the arrival of Oskar Pietuszewski.

Against Villa, both Bednarek and Kiwior played the full match, underlining their importance during Francesco Farioli’s preparations for the season ahead. Cash started for the English side but was replaced at half-time by Kosta Nedeljkovic.

All of the goals came before the break. William Gomes opened the scoring, Luka Lynch equalised, and Pepe struck what proved to be the decisive goal for Porto.

Pietuszewski still sidelined

The only missing Polish player was Pietuszewski. The 18-year-old winger is dealing with a muscle injury to his right thigh, an issue that has kept him out of Porto’s recent friendlies. The problem also ruled him out on a busy day in which Porto played two matches.

His absence is a setback in personal terms, particularly at a stage of pre-season when younger players often have a chance to impress. For now, though, Porto appear to be managing his recovery carefully as competitive fixtures draw closer.

Competitive dates approaching for both clubs

Neither side has long to wait before the season begins in earnest. Porto are due to contest the Portuguese Super Cup on 1 August against Torreense, the surprise winners of the domestic cup. A week later, they begin their league campaign against Alverca.

Villa also have a major occasion on the horizon. They are scheduled to face Paris Saint-Germain, the Champions League winners, in the UEFA Super Cup at the Red Bull Arena in Salzburg on 12 August. Their Premier League campaign starts in the penultimate weekend of August.

There may yet be another meaningful meeting between Porto and Villa later in the season. Both clubs have already secured places in the league phase of the Champions League, raising the prospect that this pre-season fixture may not be the last time they cross paths.
