Arteta urges Premier League to expand matchday squads

Mikel Arteta has urged the Premier League to increase the size of matchday squads, arguing that the current 20-player limit is out of step with other major European leagues and can have a negative impact on players left out.

The Arsenal manager said he has been pressing for a rule change that would allow clubs to include more players on matchdays. In his view, the present system creates unnecessary problems for teams competing across a crowded calendar and, more importantly, for the players who miss out.

Premier League clubs can currently name 20 players for a game, including at least three homegrown players. By contrast, clubs in La Liga are permitted to name 23 players in their matchday squad, while Serie A sides can include 25.

Arteta said the issue goes beyond selection headaches. He believes repeatedly having to leave players behind can damage their sense of involvement and affect their wellbeing, especially at clubs managing domestic and European commitments at the same time.

Player welfare at the centre of the argument

Arteta framed the debate primarily around welfare rather than convenience. With the demands of league, cup and international football continuing to grow, he argued that squads need greater flexibility to cope with the physical and emotional strain placed on players.

Arsenal have been competing on several fronts in recent seasons, and Arteta suggested that English clubs should not be working with tighter matchday restrictions than their counterparts elsewhere in Europe. He said every squad ideally needs more than 20 outfield players available on matchdays to meet the level of demand created by the modern schedule.

His point was also rooted in the human side of management. Informing players that they are not merely out of the starting lineup but excluded from the entire matchday group is, he said, a difficult part of the job and one that offers little benefit to anyone involved.

How the current rules create a squeeze

Premier League clubs are allowed to register 25 senior players for the season, defined as those over the age of 21, with at least eight of those classed as homegrown. That means a club can have five senior players unavailable for selection on every matchday simply because of the squad-size cap.

Arteta argued that this does not help the club or the player. From his perspective, exclusion can hurt a player’s feeling of belonging and may also affect how that player is viewed more broadly. He suggested the solution is straightforward: allow more players to travel and be involved.

Arsenal’s wider point in a European context

Arteta said his view is informed by research into other leading clubs across Europe. His conclusion is that Arsenal are not unusual and that most top clubs operate with larger groups than those permitted on a Premier League matchday.

For Arsenal, the argument comes at a time when the club continue to balance major ambitions in domestic and European competition. Arteta appears resigned to working within the current framework for now, but his comments amount to a clear appeal for reform.

Whether the Premier League acts on that request remains to be seen. What is clear is that Arteta sees the issue as more than an administrative detail. In his eyes, expanding matchday squads would be a simple adjustment with meaningful benefits for player welfare, squad harmony and the demands of elite competition.
