Chicago Fire lose Mbokazi for the rest of the year
Gregg Berhalter has confirmed Chicago Fire defender Mbekezile Mbokazi is out for the rest of the year, with the South African set for surgery in Finland.

Chicago Fire have been dealt a significant setback after head coach Gregg Berhalter confirmed that Mbekezile Mbokazi will not play again this year. The news comes despite a positive start to the club’s Leagues Cup campaign and leaves Chicago without a defender who had become an important figure earlier in the year.
Berhalter confirms major injury blow
Speaking after Chicago Fire’s opening Leagues Cup match against Necaxa, Berhalter said the loss of Mbokazi for the remainder of the year was a difficult one for the club. The central defender, who is from South Africa, has not played a single minute since the start of the season because of health problems.
Mbokazi is now set to undergo surgery in Finland, underlining the seriousness of the issue and the scale of the challenge facing Chicago as the campaign continues.
Mbokazi had built his standing in the spring
The defender had established himself as a reliable presence for Chicago Fire in the spring. He made 12 appearances and did enough to earn a call-up for South Africa at the World Cup.
That tournament brought one of the more notable moments of his recent career. South Africa advanced from the group stage after beating South Korea, drawing with the Czech Republic and losing to Mexico. Their run ended in the round of 32 with a defeat to co-hosts Canada.
For Chicago, that background only sharpens the sense of loss. Mbokazi had shown he could be trusted at club level and had then carried that momentum onto the international stage.
Chicago balancing progress with concern
Chicago Fire did at least begin their Leagues Cup campaign with a win over Necaxa. The competition offers a major incentive, with a top-three finish enough to secure qualification for the CONCACAF Champions Cup.
Still, Berhalter’s side have had mixed results across their first four matches of the season. They have suffered defeats to Inter Miami and New York City, but also recorded wins over Charlotte FC and Necaxa. The victory against Charlotte came after a brace from Robert Lewandowski.
Those results suggest Chicago have enough attacking quality to remain competitive, but Mbokazi’s absence could yet become a defining issue as the schedule intensifies.
Important week ahead in Leagues Cup
Chicago Fire now face another demanding stretch in the Leagues Cup. Their next matches are against Santos Laguna and Cruz Azul over the coming week.
With Mbokazi ruled out for the rest of the year, those fixtures will also offer an early indication of how well Berhalter’s team can cope without one of the players who had looked so important to the side before this injury setback.
