Manchester United midfield rebuild leaves Carrick little room for error

Manchester United have targeted a long-standing weakness in midfield. With Tielemans and Santos in, and Baleba a possibility, Michael Carrick now has stronger options for his first full season.

Manchester United midfield rebuild leaves Carrick little room for error

Manchester United have spent years searching for authority and consistency in midfield, and this summer’s business suggests the club believe they have finally confronted the problem head-on. With Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos already signed, and Carlos Baleba a possible next addition, Michael Carrick is being handed a department that looks far stronger than the one he inherited.

A long-running problem in the engine room

For much of the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era, United’s midfield recruitment has been defined more by false starts than by sustained success. The source of the frustration is not simply that signings failed to meet expectations, but that the club repeatedly invested in players who did not go on to become long-term elite performers at Old Trafford.

Bastian Schweinsteiger became an early symbol of that trend. His arrival was greeted with confidence inside the club, but his time at United ultimately fell well short of the impact many had anticipated. In that sense, he was not an isolated case but part of a wider pattern.

The argument is that United have not truly solved this area since Carrick himself arrived from Tottenham in 2006. While Paul Pogba brought enormous talent, he did not deliver the level of consistency expected. Casemiro arrived with a glittering reputation from Real Madrid, but was already beyond his peak years. Others including Fred, Morgan Schneiderlin, Ander Herrera, Sofyan Amrabat, Daley Blind and Manuel Ugarte are presented as examples of a midfield strategy that too often produced functional or underwhelming outcomes rather than a settled core.

Tielemans and Santos change the picture

That is why the additions of Tielemans and Santos matter. United have targeted a zone that has lacked balance, energy and reliability for years. Tielemans offers competition as a No 8, while Santos is another No 6 option, giving Carrick a more varied central group to work with.

If Baleba also arrives from Brighton, the shape of the rebuild becomes even clearer. United would then have assembled a midfield unit with mobility, aggression, technical quality and a better spread of profiles. For a manager beginning his first full campaign in charge, that would represent a significant shift from the uncertainty that has often surrounded this part of the squad.

There is also the case of Kobbie Mainoo, the notable exception among United’s recent midfield stories because he emerged from within. Mainoo had already shown his quality on major occasions for club and country, and his situation changed after Carrick’s appointment in mid-January following Ruben Amorim’s sacking. He now looks set to compete directly with Tielemans in a refreshed central structure.

Carrick’s options and Mount’s role

Mason Mount has also been presented as a realistic midfield option after encouraging pre-season displays. The 27-year-old impressed in an attacking midfield role before suffering another injury setback in a friendly draw with Paris Saint-Germain this month.

Carrick, however, has publicly played down concerns over Mount’s fitness. The United manager described him as a top player, said he had been outstanding in the opening games, and insisted there was no cause for alarm. Carrick’s message was that Mount needs rhythm after missing football in recent years and that he is expected back soon.

That matters because depth, as much as quality, has been a recurring issue for United in midfield. Carrick now appears closer to having both.

A favourable opening brings expectation

United travel to Hull on Saturday before hosting Ipswich a week on Sunday, with a trip to Everton following before Manchester City visit Old Trafford on 13 September. Carrick has rejected the idea that the opening schedule is straightforward, but there is little doubt it offers an opportunity.

With the midfield refreshed and further reinforcement still possible, United have a chance to begin the season with momentum. For Carrick, that is the key point. The club have moved decisively to fix a weakness that has lingered for too long. If this rebuild works, United may finally have the platform they have lacked. If it does not, the excuses will be harder to find.
