Mourinho voices concern over extended international break

Jose Mourinho has said the upcoming three-week international break is a concern for Real Madrid, with the club set to lose a number of players for an extended period early in the season.

Mourinho wary of time away from club

Speaking before Real Madrid's home La Liga game against Malaga, Mourinho made clear that the length of the break is at the centre of his concern. The Madrid manager said being without players for three weeks creates a difficult situation for any club, particularly when so many members of the squad are involved with their national teams.

Mourinho's point was not simply about players travelling to represent their countries. He suggested he is less troubled by those who are expected to play regularly during the international window than by those who report for duty and then spend long periods without meaningful involvement.

From a club perspective, that can leave coaches in an awkward position: players are unavailable for training and preparation, yet may return without having gained much competitive rhythm.

A changed calendar for the new season

The first international break of the 2026-27 men's season will be longer than usual. Rather than separate windows in September and October, the schedule has been combined into one three-week period across late September and early October.

During that spell, national teams will play four international matches instead of the more familiar two. The other international breaks in November, March and June remain in place.

The adjustment comes after changes to the wider football calendar. Among the factors behind it are the timing of the 2026 World Cup final, which will be played on 19 July, as well as considerations around player welfare and travel.

Injuries and workload remain key issues

Mourinho said he respects players' decisions when it comes to international duty and did not want to overstate the issue. Even so, he acknowledged a familiar concern for club managers: the physical toll that can follow these periods away.

He pointed to the risk of injuries during international breaks and in the immediate aftermath of players returning to their clubs. That concern is heightened when the absence is longer than normal and when players are moving between demanding travel schedules, national-team camps and club commitments.

For Real Madrid, the challenge will be to manage the group that remains at the training ground while preparing for the return of those who have been away. Mourinho accepted that there is little clubs can do to alter the situation, but his comments underline the balancing act facing elite sides whenever the international calendar expands.

Early-season test for Real Madrid

Mourinho has returned to Real Madrid after thirteen years, and the extended break will present one of the first squad-management tests of his latest spell in charge. With key players expected to be called up, maintaining continuity at club level may prove difficult.

That is why the issue matters so much to the Madrid manager. His concern is not with international football itself, but with the practical consequences for preparation, fitness and rhythm at a stage of the campaign when teams are still trying to build momentum.
