Górnik Zabrze out of Europa League after Ferencváros draw

Górnik Zabrze are out of Europa League qualifying after a 1-1 home draw with Ferencváros, a result that sent the Hungarian side through over two legs and left the Polish club to regroup for the Conference League qualifiers against AS Monaco.

Bright start, but no reward

The task was clear before kick-off at the Stadion im. Ernesta Pohla. After losing the first leg in Budapest, Górnik needed a win to keep alive hopes of reaching the league phase of this season’s Europa League.

They approached the return with encouragement from their domestic form. Michal Gašparík’s side had beaten Radomiak Radom in convincing fashion at the weekend, and the coach made six changes to his starting line-up. Ferencváros, still waiting for their league campaign to begin, had most recently faced Real Madrid in a friendly.

From the opening moments, Górnik played with urgency. They pushed forward early and created chances, with Erik Janža driving into the box and Erik Prekop going close. Prekop remained heavily involved in the first half, while Maksym Chłań and Josema also tested their luck from distance.

Ferencváros offered little as an attacking force before the break. Their focus was on protecting their advantage, and when they did threaten, Philipp Schulze dealt with it comfortably.

Urbański gives Górnik belief

Just as the first half seemed set to end without a goal, Górnik found the breakthrough they had been chasing. Paulo Bernardo was fouled in the penalty area by Philippe Rommens, and referee Andrea Colombo pointed to the spot.

Kacper Urbański converted the penalty to level the tie on the night and lift the home crowd. At that stage, Górnik had the momentum and looked the more assertive side.

The pattern continued after the interval. The hosts kept searching for the second goal that would have changed the complexion of the tie. Prekop had another opening but failed to connect properly, while Janža was denied by Dénes Dibusz.

Late blow ends Europa League hopes

For all their control, Górnik could not sustain the same intensity deep into the second half. Ferencváros gradually grew into the contest, and the decisive moment arrived late on in cruel fashion.

With eight minutes of normal time remaining, the visitors found an equaliser, although it came via a painful deflection off Michal Sáček into his own net. It was the kind of moment that summed up the fine margins of the tie and left Górnik with too much to do.

That goal settled the outcome of the two-legged contest. Ferencváros advanced to the fourth qualifying round of the Europa League and are now guaranteed European football in the autumn. Górnik, meanwhile, exited after a 1-2 aggregate defeat, mirroring another narrow European disappointment earlier in qualifying.

What comes next for Górnik

There is little time for Górnik to dwell on the result. Their immediate focus turns back to domestic action with a home match against Wisła Kraków on Sunday.

Four days later, they return to Europe in the fourth qualifying round of the Conference League, where AS Monaco await. That offers another demanding test, but also a fresh route for Górnik to extend their continental campaign after a night that will feel like a major missed opportunity.

The frustration will be sharpened by the performance itself. For long stretches, Górnik were the stronger team and played with the greater ambition. In the end, though, they were punished for not turning that superiority into the margin they needed.
