Morawiecki revisits Poland bonus scandal after Qatar World Cup

Mateusz Morawiecki has revisited the bonus controversy that clouded Poland’s 2022 World Cup campaign, admitting he must accept part of the blame for an episode that badly damaged the national team’s image despite a long-awaited sporting breakthrough in Qatar.

A historic result overshadowed

Poland’s tournament in Qatar delivered the national team’s best World Cup outcome in 36 years. Under Czesław Michniewicz, Poland opened with a draw against Mexico, then beat Saudi Arabia before losing to eventual champions Argentina in the final group game. Those results were still enough to secure a first appearance in the knockout stage since 1986.

That run ended in the round of 16, where France proved too strong. On the pitch, the campaign brought a level of progress that had eluded Poland for decades. Off it, however, the mood around the team deteriorated sharply.

Style concerns and the bonus row

Even during the tournament, supporters had voiced frustration at the team’s style of play under Michniewicz. But the issue that caused the greatest backlash came away from the field.

The dispute was later described publicly by Sebastian Staszewski, author of Lewandowski. Prawdziwy, who said the situation became deeply uncomfortable inside the squad environment. His account pointed to disagreement between Michniewicz and players over the proposed distribution, underlining how a successful tournament became entangled in a damaging internal controversy.

Morawiecki accepts responsibility

Speaking on Kanał Zero, Morawiecki returned to the subject nearly four years later and said he regretted his role in what became a scandal. In the interview, he stated that he had to take on part of the responsibility for the affair.

That acknowledgement is significant because the bonus issue became one of the defining stories of Poland’s World Cup aftermath. What should have been remembered primarily as a breakthrough campaign instead became associated with reputational damage, public anger and reports of division behind the scenes.

The fallout for Michniewicz and PZPN

The consequences extended beyond the tournament itself. Shortly after Poland’s final match at the World Cup, the Polish Football Association, PZPN, announced that Michniewicz’s contract would not be extended.
