Poland hold 10th in UEFA ranking after mixed qualifying night

Poland kept hold of 10th place in the UEFA ranking after the latest set of second-round qualifying matches in the Champions League and Conference League, but the margin remains delicate. Results for Lech Poznan, Gornik Zabrze, Rakow Czestochowa and GKS Katowice produced a balanced return overall, leaving Poland looking over its shoulder at several rival nations.

Two wins, two defeats for Polish clubs

The latest round brought mixed emotions for the Polish sides involved in Europe. Lech Poznan and Rakow Czestochowa both won their matches, while Gornik Zabrze and GKS Katowice were beaten.

Lech's 4-1 victory over Denmark's Aarhus GF added 0.200 points to Poland's UEFA ranking total. That gain was offset by Gornik's 1-0 away defeat to Fenerbahce, increasing the importance of the Conference League ties involving Rakow and GKS.

Rakow delivered the response Poland needed, although it did not begin smoothly against Valletta. The visitors took the lead in the 23rd minute through Manuel Morrello, forcing Dawid Kroczek's side to chase the game. After the break, however, Rakow took control. Mahir Emreli, Patryk Makuch and Stratos Svarnas all scored, with Svarnas sealing a 3-1 win in the 90th minute.

GKS Katowice let early advantage slip

The evening could have looked even better from a Polish perspective had GKS Katowice held on in Zilina. Rafał Górak's team made an excellent start when Bartosz Nowak's corner was headed in by Lukas Klemenz.

That advantage did not last. Miroslav Kacer equalised from the penalty spot, and after the interval Timotej Hranca scored what proved to be the winner in a 2-1 defeat for GKS. With that result, Poland missed the chance to add further points to its coefficient tally.

The overall picture, then, is one of stability rather than progress. Poland remain in 10th, but the latest round underlined how little room there is for error as the qualifying campaign continues.

Czech and Greek pressure remains

The key focus beyond the Polish clubs was on the nations trying to close the gap. Czech teams remain within touching distance. Hradec Kralove beat Tromso 1-0, while Jablonec lost 3-2 to Varazdin, leaving the Czech Republic still 0.500 points behind Poland.

Greece also made ground that keeps the race alive. PAOK defeated Dynamo Kyiv 3-2 and Panathinaikos beat Paks 2-1, allowing the Greeks to add another 0.200 points to their total.

Denmark, currently 13th, were also worth monitoring as a possible outsider in the battle, but their clubs did not make a significant push. Nordsjaelland lost 1-0 to GAIS, while Copenhagen drew 3-3 with Polissia Zhytomyr.

Turkey stay ahead as the race tightens

Turkey, meanwhile, continue to occupy ninth place and remain in solid shape after Besiktas beat Midtjylland 1-0. That leaves Turkish clubs on 45.475 points and still ahead of Poland in the standings.

For now, Poland's position in the top 10 is intact. But with Czech and Greek clubs still applying pressure, and with return legs still to come, the next week could prove significant in shaping the country's UEFA ranking outlook.
