Allan Elias to Man City: late bloomer shaped by tragedy

Manchester City's signing of Allan Elias from Palmeiras brings a versatile Brazilian to the Premier League after a difficult, deeply personal journey.

Allan Elias to Man City: late bloomer shaped by tragedy

Manchester City’s signing of Allan Elias from Palmeiras is not just a move for a promising Brazilian talent. It is also the latest chapter in a career built on resilience, patience and a refusal to let personal tragedy define him.

A different path to the top

Allan does not arrive in England with the profile of a conventional wonderkid. His rise has been slower, and perhaps for that reason more compelling. Once known as “Mini Balotelli” as a child because of his hairstyle, he has developed into a player valued less for hype than for application, versatility and steady improvement.

That background helps explain why Manchester City’s decision to bring him in from Palmeiras has been framed as a smart piece of business. Allan has emerged over the past 18 months as a key figure for the Brazilian club, overcoming the sense that he had been overlooked in his own academy system.

As recently as late 2024, he believed his time at Palmeiras might be coming to an end. Approaching 21 and seeing others promoted ahead of him, he feared the opportunity had passed. Before what he thought would be his final U20 appearance, he cried with his parents, convinced his future lay elsewhere.

Instead, Palmeiras coach Abel Ferreira intervened. After spotting something in Allan, he told him in training that a new contract was coming and made clear to the club’s sporting leadership that the player should stay. That decision changed the direction of Allan’s career.

Personal loss behind the progress

Allan’s story is marked by hardship well beyond football. The death of his former Figueirense team-mate Vitor Isaias in the 2019 fire at Flamengo’s academy accommodation had a profound impact on him and his family, who then moved to Sao Paulo to be closer to him.

During the pandemic, Allan also lost his sister Leticia to Covid-19. His hand gesture after scoring, making an “L”, is a tribute to her. He also carries a tattoo in memory of his best friend Gustavo Paco, who died in a motorcycle accident shortly after the pair had spent time together on the beach.

Those experiences form the backdrop to a career that, at one stage, seemed in danger of slipping away. Instead, Allan has turned persistence into progress.

Backed by those who know him best

Lucas Andrade, who coached Allan at Palmeiras at U15 and U20 level, believes the player’s development simply required more time than some others. In his view, Allan has now reached the level needed to make an impact.

Andrade recalled a youth tournament in England as a significant moment in that belief. Watching Allan perform strongly against Chelsea and Tottenham convinced him that the Brazilian had the quality to return one day and play in the country at senior level.

There is a neat symmetry, then, in Allan now arriving at Manchester City. Years after watching a final involving City and Chelsea from the crowd, he returns to England as a Premier League player.

Why City see value in Allan

For City, Allan appears to represent more than potential alone. He is described as talented and versatile, but also as a player whose game is rooted in work ethic. That combination may explain why he has gone from being underestimated at Palmeiras to becoming one of the club’s most valuable recent success stories.

His journey has not followed the usual script. But for Manchester City, that may be part of the appeal. Allan Elias arrives from Palmeiras as an underrated gem, carrying both the scars of loss and the evidence that he can keep moving forward.
