Barcelona complete £65.4m Rodri signing from Man City

Barcelona have confirmed the signing of Rodri from Manchester City in a deal worth £65.4m, bringing one of the most influential midfielders in European football back to LaLiga on a four-year contract.

Barcelona land a major midfield addition

The Spain midfielder joins Barcelona after a hugely successful spell at City, where he established himself as a central figure in one of the most decorated sides of the modern era. Rodri, a World Cup winner with Spain and a former Ballon d'Or winner, leaves having helped City collect four Premier League titles as well as the Champions League.

At 30, Rodri had entered the final year of his contract at the Etihad Stadium. City had wanted him to remain and sign an extension, but Barcelona's persistence ultimately paid off. Their first two offers, worth £40m and £55m, were rejected before a third proposal secured an agreement.

Why Rodri's departure matters to City

Rodri's exit leaves a significant gap in Manchester City's midfield. His importance to the team has been underlined repeatedly since his arrival from Atletico Madrid ahead of the 2019/20 season, both through his control in possession and the balance he gives the side without the ball.

The numbers in matches he has not started offer a stark indication of the challenge facing City. In 87 games without Rodri in the starting line-up, they lost 20 times, only one fewer than across the 179 matches he did start. The team's win rate also fell from 71.5 per cent with him in the side to 62.1 per cent without him, while their attacking output dropped and the number of goals conceded increased.

That trend was highlighted again in the recent 3-0 defeat to Arsenal in the Community Shield, a result that reinforced how different City can look when Rodri is missing from midfield.

City move for replacements

City are already working on plans to reshape the squad following Rodri's departure. Enzo Maresca's side are pursuing replacements not only for Rodri but also for Tijjani Reijnders, who is set to join Saudi Arabian club Al Qadsiah for around £51m.

Among the names under consideration is Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez. City remain interested, although they missed the deadline to launch a bid by 5pm on August 14.

They are also in talks with Lille over Morocco international Ayyoub Bouaddi. Lille are understood to want around £85m for the midfielder, and discussions between the clubs were confirmed over the weekend by head coach Davide Ancelotti.

A statement signing for Barcelona

For Barcelona, the deal represents a major statement in the market. Rodri arrives with elite-level experience, a proven record of winning major honours and a profile that should immediately strengthen the club's midfield options.

For City, the focus now turns to how they replace a player whose influence has been reflected not just in silverware, but in the team's overall level whenever he has been absent.
