Mourinho faces midfield dilemma at Real Madrid

Real Madrid have set their sights high for the 2026/27 season, but Spanish reports suggest Jose Mourinho may still be missing the one piece needed to make the team function as intended. After a difficult campaign by the club's standards, Madrid have moved aggressively in the market, yet concerns remain over whether the squad has the right balance through the middle.

Ambitious rebuild, familiar pressure

The expectations at the Bernabeu are clear. Real want to challenge for the La Liga title, the Copa del Rey, the Spanish Super Cup and the Champions League as they attempt to respond to one of their poorest seasons in recent years.

To do that, the club have already added several notable names. Yan Diomande, Marc Cucurella, Bernardo Silva and Denzel Dumfries are among the arrivals brought in to raise the level of the squad and give Mourinho more options across the pitch.

Even so, according to Albert Ortega of El Confidencial, those additions may not fully solve the structural issue at the heart of the side.

Why Rodri mattered so much

The player viewed as the missing link was Rodri. Real Madrid pushed to sign the Manchester City midfielder, but the battle for him appears to have swung in Barcelona's favour, even if nothing has yet been formally completed.

That matters because Rodri was seen as the type of midfielder capable of connecting the second line with the attack. Without a profile like his, there is a risk that Real's attacking talent becomes harder to maximise. The concern is not over a lack of quality in forward areas, but over how effectively that quality can be supplied and organised.

Ortega's argument is that Real could end up with an abundance of elite attackers, but too few players able to knit the team together consistently from midfield. In that scenario, the burden would fall heavily on figures such as Arda Guler and Bernardo Silva to provide the link between the lines.

The balance Mourinho must find

That leaves Mourinho with a clear tactical challenge at the start of his second spell in Madrid. If he cannot establish the right relationship between midfield and attack, Real risk becoming a side split into separate units rather than a cohesive whole.

It is a familiar issue. Last season, the squad already contained significant star power, yet neither Xabi Alonso nor Alvaro Arbeloa managed to find the formula that brought the best out of those players on the pitch. The quality was there, but the understanding and collective fluency were not, and Real ended the campaign without silverware.

Mourinho now returns to a club he previously led between 2010 and 2013, a period in which he won La Liga, the Copa del Rey and the Spanish Super Cup. The Champions League, however, eluded him.

A squad rich in talent, but still one question short

For all the excitement around Real's recruitment drive, the central question is whether this squad has the midfield profile required to support its attacking firepower. Missing out on Rodri may prove significant not simply because of his individual level, but because of the role he was expected to fill.

That is now Mourinho's problem to solve. Real Madrid have assembled a squad packed with names, ambition and pressure. Whether that becomes a title-winning team may depend on what happens in the space between defence and attack.
