Why Lech Poznań Missed Out on Niklas Dorsch

Lech Poznań's search for midfield reinforcements led them to Niklas Dorsch earlier this summer, but the Bundesliga-based player did not end up in Poland. Instead, the German signed for MLS side Toronto FC, with reports indicating that the financial demands of FC Heidenheim were the decisive factor.

Price tag proved too steep

Interest in Dorsch had been reported as early as June, when Lech were said to be monitoring the possibility of bringing in the midfielder. According to Weszło, the deal fell apart for a straightforward reason: Heidenheim wanted 5 million euros for the player.

That figure was beyond what Lech were prepared to commit. The report noted that the Polish champions have already spent heavily this summer, with sporting director Tomasz Rząsa saying total outlay, including all fees, has reached 15 million euros. Even so, Dorsch's valuation was considered too high.

Lech waited, Toronto moved

Weszło added that Lech were prepared to wait in the hope that Heidenheim would lower their demands. That strategy did not pay off. Toronto FC took advantage of the situation and completed a deal for the midfielder instead.

The failed move does not necessarily end Lech's plans to strengthen in the centre of the pitch. The same report suggested that signing a new defensive midfielder remains possible, even if Antoni Kozubal stays at the club.

Dorsch brought top-level experience

It is easy to see why Lech were interested. Dorsch has built a solid career at a high level, making 13 appearances for Germany's youth national team and debuting for Bayern Munich under Jupp Heynckes. Across spells in Germany, he has also played 118 Bundesliga matches.

Last season, he featured 32 times for Heidenheim in the Bundesliga and registered one assist. Despite that involvement, the club dropped into Germany's second tier.

Lech balancing Europe and recruitment

The timing of the missed opportunity is notable, with Lech continuing their European campaign and preparing to face Danish side Aarhus after winning the away leg 4-1. Additional depth in midfield could have been useful as the Polish champions juggle domestic and continental demands.

So far, Lech's summer business has delivered mixed early returns. One player to make an immediate impression is centre-back Terry Yegbe, who has already won over supporters and scored a standout goal in the away match against Aarhus.

For now, Dorsch is no longer an option. But if the reports are accurate, Lech's search for a defensive midfielder may not be over yet.
