Celtic supporters turned their anger on the club’s hierarchy after another painful Champions League exit, with Legia Warsaw unexpectedly drawn back into the conversation during a protest at Celtic Park.

European exit triggers supporter backlash

Celtic had appeared to be in a commanding position in their tie against LASK, taking a three-goal advantage into the return leg. But the Austrian side overturned the deficit, forced extra time and eventually won 5-1, leaving Celtic out of the Champions League once again.

The disappointment was sharpened by the sense of repetition. According to the source material, Celtic had also fallen at the same stage a year earlier, when they were eliminated by Kairat Almaty. That sequence of setbacks has clearly tested the patience of part of the support.

Protest at Celtic Park before Falkirk match

Before the league game against Falkirk, the North Curve section at Celtic Park became the focal point for a coordinated protest. The action was led by the Green Brigade and Bhoys groups, who blamed the club’s leadership for the latest European failure.

Banners displayed in the stands described the situation as a humiliation on a global scale and called for the board to be removed. Supporters also unveiled images of senior figures at the club, including chief executive Michael Nicholson, Dermot Desmond, chief financial officer Chris McKay and head of security Mark Hargreaves.

Why Legia Warsaw was mentioned

The protest did not focus only on the current elimination. Fans also revisited a series of European disappointments from recent years, and Legia Warsaw was among the clubs referenced.

That is a reminder of one of the most remarkable ties involving a Polish club in European competition. In 2014, Legia outplayed Celtic in Champions League qualifying and won the tie on the pitch by a 6-1 aggregate margin.

Yet Legia did not progress. Bartosz Bereszynski appeared late in the second leg despite not being eligible, prompting UEFA to award Celtic a 3-0 victory by default. That changed the aggregate score to 4-4, and under the away-goals rule in force at the time, Celtic went through.

An old wound that still lingers

More than a decade on, the reaction at Celtic Park suggests that the sporting damage from that meeting with Legia still resonates with supporters. Even though Celtic advanced administratively, the scale of the defeat on the field has remained part of the club’s wider European story.

The latest protest underlined that point. For some fans, the collapse against LASK was not an isolated failure but another entry in a longer list of continental setbacks — and one that revived memories of Legia Warsaw in the process.
