Lato urges clarity as Lewandowski weighs Poland future

Grzegorz Lato has said Robert Lewandowski must make a clear decision over his future with Poland, insisting there can be no compromise if the striker is to remain involved with the national team. The former Poland forward was speaking amid uncertainty over Lewandowski’s availability for the upcoming September-October international window.

Club schedule creates a difficult backdrop

The issue has emerged because Poland’s next camp falls during an active period in MLS, with Chicago Fire scheduled to play Charlotte FC during the same window and then Vancouver Whitecaps shortly after Poland’s final match of the camp. While FIFA regulations require clubs to release players during the official international period, the calendar still creates an obvious tension between club and country.

Reports had suggested Lewandowski might travel in for only Poland’s first Nations League fixture, at home to Bosnia and Herzegovina. Those claims were firmly rejected by people around the player, who described the story as false and said there had never been a plan for him to come only for one match. They also indicated that more clarity on his international future should arrive soon.

Even so, no definitive statement has yet come from either the Polish FA or the national team captain, leaving the debate open.

Lato warns against players choosing matches

Lato’s view was unequivocal. He argued that allowing any player to select only certain fixtures would be damaging for the dressing room and could undermine the team from within. In his assessment, such an arrangement would set the wrong example for the rest of the squad, regardless of Lewandowski’s status.

The former Poland international said the central question is not whether the national side still needs Lewandowski, but whether Lewandowski is prepared to commit fully and without restrictions. If not, Lato suggested, there is little value in trying to force a halfway solution.

He also pointed to the position of head coach Jan Urban, saying the manager would have to consider the wider consequences of any special arrangement. Lato’s argument was that a coach who accepted selective availability would inevitably come under pressure if results turned against him.

A view shaped by personal experience

Lato framed his comments through his own career. After the 1982 World Cup, he moved from Lokeren in Belgium to Atlante in Mexico and concluded that continuing with Poland no longer made sense. He cited the travel demands, time-zone changes and the difficulty of adapting quickly enough between long-haul journeys.

That experience appears to inform his sympathy for Lewandowski’s situation now. Lato did not try to dictate the striker’s choice, but he made clear that the decision should be honest and final rather than managed on a match-by-match basis.

If the end comes, Lato wants a clean break

Lato said any decision taken by Lewandowski should be respected. If the forward decides to step away from Poland duty, he believes the response should be gratitude for what he has given the national team. But he also argued that if the alternative is appearing only in selected matches, then Poland would be better served by beginning a new chapter and looking for different solutions.

As an example of how such a departure could be handled, Lato pointed to Lionel Messi, saying he admired the way the Argentina captain thanked his coach and team-mates after the World Cup. His preference is for Lewandowski, should he choose to go, to do so in similarly clear and dignified fashion.

For now, the uncertainty remains. Poland are preparing for a four-match Nations League camp, and until Lewandowski or the Polish FA speaks publicly, the discussion over his role is unlikely to disappear.
