Lewandowski backs Barcelona and weighs up Real, Mourinho

Robert Lewandowski believes Barcelona have assembled a squad capable of aiming high this season, with the former striker also offering his view on Real Madrid’s summer business and Jose Mourinho’s return to the Bernabeu.

Speaking to AS, the Poland captain reflected on the transfer activity of his former club after leaving Barcelona at the end of the 2025/26 season. Lewandowski has since signed a two-year deal with MLS side Chicago Fire, bringing an end to his four-year spell in Catalonia.

Lewandowski sees Champions League potential

Barcelona have undergone notable changes in the market. Ferran Torres has left for Paris Saint-Germain, while Marcus Rashford has returned to Manchester United following his loan spell. In response, the club have added Anthony Gordon, Karim Adeyemi, Rodri and Gabriel Jesus.

Lewandowski’s view is that the current group has the quality and maturity to compete for the biggest prize in European club football. He pointed to the blend of talent, new arrivals and players who are no longer learning the game at the highest level but have now built meaningful experience.

He also highlighted the presence of eight World Cup-winning players in the squad, describing that as something significant not only for Barcelona but for Spanish football more broadly. From his perspective, the club’s ambition is clear: to challenge seriously for the Champions League.

Still watching his former club

Although the time difference with the United States has made it harder to follow every game closely, Lewandowski said he remains aware of what is happening at Barcelona. His assessment was measured, suggesting the team may need time, but stressing that the squad is full of high-level players.

He also underlined a broader point about elite football in Europe: early-season form matters less than sustaining standards across the full campaign. That, in his view, will determine whether Barcelona can turn promise into silverware by the end of the season.

Real Madrid and Mourinho earn respect

Lewandowski did not ignore Barcelona’s biggest rivals. He said Real Madrid are stronger now because of their new signings and the return of Mourinho, who has taken charge at the club again 13 years after his previous spell.

The striker suggested that, after two years without trophies, Madrid’s mentality could become a decisive factor this season. Even so, he made clear where his loyalties lie, insisting that he will always be backing Barcelona.

Life in Chicago after Barcelona

Lewandowski also opened up on his move to Chicago Fire, describing the switch from Europe to the United States as a major change. He admitted the beginning was not straightforward, particularly because he joined without the benefit of a full pre-season.

Now, though, he says he is settling in with the team and adjusting to his new surroundings. Lewandowski added that he and his family are happy with the city, the club and the dressing room environment, and he hopes a more stable training period will help him improve further in the coming weeks.
