Poland’s champions set for major Champions League boost

Polish football is set to benefit from a significant UEFA ranking boost in the 2027/28 European campaign, with the national champions and the domestic cup winners in particularly strong positions. Results collected by Polish clubs across the 2021/22 to 2025/26 seasons have lifted Poland to 12th place in the relevant ranking period, creating a far more favourable route into Europe.

Strong platform built by Polish clubs

Five Polish teams entered European qualifying this summer, with Lech Poznań and Jagiellonia Białystok ultimately securing places in the Europa League league phase. Lech fell short of the Champions League but still progressed into the second-tier competition, while Jagiellonia impressed during qualifying, including a notable win over Rangers.

Elsewhere, Górnik Zabrze were unable to survive the qualifying rounds across the Champions League, Europa League and Conference League pathways. GKS Katowice and Raków Częstochowa will also not feature in Europe’s third-tier competition.

Even so, the wider picture for Polish football remains highly encouraging. According to information highlighted by Jan Sikorski and Ekstraklasa S.A., the country’s recent coefficient performance has created a much better starting point for clubs qualifying for Europe next season.

Why the 2027/28 route looks so favourable

The key factor is UEFA’s ranking calculation for the 2027/28 access list, which takes into account results from 2021/22 through 2025/26. During that period, points in the main stages of European competition were earned by Lech Poznań, Jagiellonia Białystok, Raków Częstochowa and Legia Warszawa.

That collective contribution has placed Poland 12th over the cycle, and the reward is substantial. It is already clear that at least two Polish clubs will play in a European league phase next season: one at minimum in the Europa League and another at minimum in the Conference League.

• The Polish champions will begin in the fourth qualifying round of the Champions League.
• The Polish Cup winners, or the third-placed Ekstraklasa side if the cup winners finish in the top two, will start in the fourth qualifying round of the Europa League.
• The runners-up will enter Champions League qualifying from the second round via the league path.
• The fourth-placed team will start in the second qualifying round of the Conference League.

For the champions, the significance is obvious: reaching the Champions League league phase would require winning just one two-legged tie from that starting point.

A potential complication for runners-up and cup winners

There is, however, an important caveat. Ekstraklasa S.A. clarified what would happen if the same club finished second in the league and also won the Polish Cup. In that scenario, the club would enter the Champions League from the second qualifying round, as UEFA prioritises its top competition.

That means there would be no guaranteed league-phase place despite the cup success. Instead, the team finishing third in the Ekstraklasa would take the place in the fourth qualifying round of the Europa League.

It creates an unusual situation in which finishing third could, in some circumstances, prove more advantageous than ending the season as runners-up while also holding the domestic cup.

Scheduling already taking shape

The European qualifying campaign for Polish clubs in 2027/28 is scheduled to begin in July 2027 and run through late August. Ekstraklasa is meanwhile planning to start its domestic season on 23 July and, according to Marcin Stefański, does not intend to stage full midweek league rounds.

For now, Lech Poznań and Jagiellonia Białystok still have their Europa League campaigns ahead of them. But the broader message is already clear: Poland’s recent work in Europe has opened the door to a far more promising future, with the national champions now closer than ever to the Champions League proper.
