Sesko shines as Manchester United beat Sabah in Europe

Manchester United made a winning return to the Champions League by beating Sabah 4-0 at Old Trafford, delivering the kind of controlled European night they badly wanted after recent domestic frustration.

United find the right response

There was a wider context to the evening for both clubs. United were back in Europe’s top competition after a two-year absence and needed a steadying performance ahead of the weekend derby against Manchester City. Sabah, meanwhile, arrived for their Champions League debut carrying one of the more unusual stories in the competition, having risen rapidly in a short period and reached this stage after an unexpected title success in Azerbaijan.

For all the romance around the visitors, the match itself eventually followed a more familiar pattern. Sabah were willing to play and did not simply retreat into a defensive shell, but United’s greater quality told once the game opened up.

First-half control turns into a clear lead

United’s display built gradually before accelerating late in the first half. Matheus Cunha opened the scoring after Bruno Fernandes had helped keep an attacking move alive, with Bryan Mbeumo and Patrick Dorgu also involved in the move before Cunha applied the finish.

That breakthrough shifted the mood and United took firm control before the interval. Fernandes added another and Benjamin Sesko, handed his first start of the season as the central striker, also found the net to send Michael Carrick’s side into half-time with a three-goal advantage.

It was the kind of clinical spell that removed any prospect of anxiety. After difficult European experiences in their previous campaign in the competition, United were able to play the second half without the sense of panic that had too often undermined them in the past.

Sesko takes his chance as Carrick keeps focus

Carrick largely resisted heavy rotation in his attacking and midfield selections, a sign that he wanted rhythm and authority in the performance. Sesko’s inclusion stood out, and the forward rewarded that decision with a goal on his first start of the campaign.

Fernandes again set the tone creatively, offering movement, urgency and invention in possession. Around him, United looked sharper once they found their tempo, and there were no late complications to disturb the evening.

Lisandro Martínez completed the scoring late on, sealing what amounted to a straightforward assignment once United had established their lead.

Sabah show ambition despite defeat

Sabah did have moments that hinted at their intent. Set up in a 4-3-3 shape, they tried to engage United rather than simply survive. One notable opening came when Kaheem Parris delivered to the back post for Joy-Lance Mickels, whose header went wide.

But that chance was not enough to alter the direction of the contest. United were more ruthless in both boxes and saw out the match without any real wobble.

The result gave Old Trafford a comfortable Champions League return and allowed attention to turn quickly to what comes next. For United, this was less about spectacle than reassurance: a professional win, four goals, and a European campaign opened without drama.

Youth League boost for United

There was also encouragement for the club away from the senior fixture. In the Uefa Youth League, United’s Under-19s beat Sabah 5-0, with 15-year-old JJ Gabriel scoring a hat-trick on his debut in the competition.
