Kane sets the standard

His playmaking, link-up work and ability to hold the ball up have all strengthened his candidacy in what is being framed as the finest year of his career so far.

Rodri and Mbappé remain major challengers

His individual brilliance is not in doubt, but the piece suggests a lack of team achievements could weaken his bid, especially given the standards attached to Real Madrid.

Yamal, Messi and Olise strengthen the shortlist

Lamine Yamal’s place among the leading names speaks to how quickly he has become one of the game’s defining young players. Injuries reduced his impact at the World Cup, yet he still played a part in Spain’s triumph. At club level, his third season as a Barcelona regular brought 41 goal contributions in 45 appearances, an extraordinary return for a player who only turned 19 in July.

Lionel Messi remains impossible to ignore. Inter Miami’s MLS title adds to his case, and his inclusion on the shortlist for a 17th time reflects his enduring level.

Michael Olise, meanwhile, has emerged as one of the most intriguing names in the field. Bayern’s attack has benefited enormously from his arrival, with the former Crystal Palace player thriving as both creator and secondary scorer. Spain managed to shut him down in the World Cup semi-final, but his two assists in the third-place match left him leading that category at the tournament.

Haaland and Bellingham still in the frame

Erling Haaland’s standing remains strong despite Manchester City’s uneven finish to the season. The Norway striker continued to add to his reputation and made a significant mark at the World Cup, ending the tournament as the joint-third top goalscorer with seven before Norway went out in the quarter-final.

Jude Bellingham completes the group of leading contenders mentioned here. The England midfielder again showed his ability to shape the biggest occasions and developed an effective partnership with Kane during another run to the World Cup semi-finals. His numbers for Real Madrid dropped in his third season there, but that decline came in a campaign where several of his teammates also fell short of previous standards.

With the award to be announced in October, the race appears to be led by Kane but far from settled. The shortlist blends established superstars, World Cup winners and younger challengers, yet the central theme is clear: England has a genuine chance to end a 25-year wait.
