Ellis Simms faces setback in Poland squad picture

Ellis Simms had recently been mentioned as an intriguing long-term option for the Poland national team, particularly in discussions about future attacking depth beyond Robert Lewandowski. But developments at Coventry City have made that prospect look considerably less certain.

From encouragement to uncertainty at Coventry

Before Coventry's meeting with Brighton, there had been positive assessments of Simms from around the club. Aaron Sutcliffe of the Coventry Observer, speaking to WP SportoweFakty, said the striker was valued by head coach Frank Lampard not only for his work on the pitch but also for his attitude and character.

That view painted Simms as a forward trusted within the squad: a player willing to work for the team, keen to improve, and appreciated by both team-mates and supporters. It also aligned with the perception that he remained a serious option in Coventry's attacking plans.

However, the picture shifted quickly. According to The Coventry Telegraph reporter Andy Turner, Simms was left out of the matchday squad against Brighton for sporting reasons rather than because of any fitness issue. That is a significant detail, because it points directly to his current place in the manager's pecking order.

Early-season signs have not been encouraging

The opening weeks of the season had already suggested Simms was not as firmly established as some might have expected. He started the first game against Arsenal and played 70 minutes, but that remains his only start so far. He then did not feature against Hull City, before making only a brief appearance from the bench against Manchester City.

On paper, there now appears to be an opening in Coventry's attack. Taiwo Awoniyi, the club's first-choice striker, was sent off and is set to serve a three-match suspension. In many situations, that would create a natural opportunity for another centre-forward to step in.

Yet the immediate evidence does not clearly favour Simms. Against Brighton, Lampard turned instead to Brandon Thomas-Asante and Sidiki Cherif from the bench. That decision suggests both are currently ahead of Simms when Coventry need to alter their attack during a game.

Why Simms is not being written off

Despite the setback, Turner has not dismissed the striker's prospects altogether. The view from Coventry is that Simms still possesses attributes that can make him a difficult opponent, particularly his physical profile and his instincts in and around the penalty area.

The key issue, however, is consistency. That is the area repeatedly highlighted as the missing piece in his development. If he can find greater regularity in his performances, there remains a belief that he has the tools to move to a higher level and become a more reliable attacking presence.

There are also broader questions beyond form alone. Simms is described as an introvert and does not speak Polish, which adds uncertainty over how quickly he would adapt to the dressing room environment if he were ever brought into the national-team setup.

For now, the idea of Simms as a realistic Poland option remains alive only in theory. Until his club situation becomes more stable, the conversation around him is likely to be driven less by potential and more by whether he can force his way back into contention at Coventry.
