Jan Tomaszewski backs Robert Lewandowski's Poland role

Jan Tomaszewski has delivered a clear verdict on Robert Lewandowski’s place in the Poland national team, insisting the striker should remain involved after confirming he will be present at the upcoming international camp.

Lewandowski avoids setting a farewell date

Lewandowski recently addressed the question of when he might step away from international football, making it clear he does not want a deadline imposed on him. The forward said he has spent 18 years with the national team, given everything to it, and will find it easier to make a decision when he feels the moment is right and the squad is ready for a change.

Those comments sparked discussion around Polish football, particularly because Lewandowski remains such a central figure in the national setup. Even with the debate over succession growing louder, the sense remains that Poland do not yet have an obvious replacement capable of filling the same role.

Tomaszewski’s stance is unequivocal

Tomaszewski left little room for ambiguity in his assessment. Speaking to Super Express, the former Poland goalkeeper said Lewandowski should still be in the squad and should continue playing for the national team.

He also argued that Lewandowski should be able to arrange his schedule in the way that suits him best, because, in Tomaszewski’s view, the player is still important to Poland. To underline his point, Tomaszewski referenced Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, saying both have consistently remained available to their national teams and that he would like to see the same from Lewandowski.

Lewandowski has not presented himself as someone who must always occupy the central role. He has also spoken about the need for a stronger influx of younger players who can help the team, with the aim of making any eventual transition less abrupt.

That wider context matters. Poland are not only discussing how long Lewandowski should continue, but also how the next generation can be introduced around him. Among the more established attacking options in the national-team picture are Adam Buksa and Karol Świderski, while Mateusz Żukowski, Karol Czubak and Adrian Benedyczak are among the names mentioned as players who could try to step into a bigger role.

Lewandowski’s planned presence at the next camp is therefore a significant boost for Poland as they prepare for a busy spell. Jan Urban is due to name his squad on Friday 18 September, with four matches scheduled across the September-October gathering.
