Kylian Mbappe says he has mixed feelings about the online memes that portray him as a military-style strongman, arguing that while some are clearly intended as jokes, the imagery can also carry a far more serious meaning.

The Real Madrid forward and France captain remains one of the most influential figures in world football. That status has helped fuel a stream of social media edits depicting him in ceremonial uniform, decorated with medals and presented as the man supposedly pulling strings behind the scenes for both club and country.

Mbappe responds to viral images

In a video shared on social media, Mbappe explained that his reaction to the memes is not straightforward. He said part of him finds them amusing, particularly when it is obvious that supporters and internet users are creating them in good spirit.

But he also made clear that he sees a more troubling side to the trend. Mbappe said comparisons with figures associated with dictatorship and mass suffering should not be treated lightly, stressing that history shows the devastation caused by such people.

“I have mixed feelings. It is partly funny, because you can see some internet users make these edits for fun, with good intentions. There is also a more serious part. We know from history lessons how much destruction such people caused. Being compared to murderers, to people who ruined the lives of millions... I do not think I have ever done something like that.”

A symbol of influence at club and country

Mbappe's prominence helps explain why the meme has gained traction online. He has scored 91 goals in 108 matches for Real Madrid, while his record for France stands at 66 goals in 106 appearances. Since receiving the captain's armband in 2023, he has become the central figure in the national team as well.

That level of importance has led some online observers to exaggerate his influence, joking that he effectively commands major decisions around him. The altered images play on that idea, presenting him less as a footballer and more as a decorated general.

Mbappe, however, suggested that even when the intent is humorous, the choice of symbolism can reveal a lack of awareness.

“I know it is presented in a joking way and it does not go that far, but sometimes it shows a lack of awareness. Sometimes political, sometimes human.”

Ballon d'Or recognition again in sight

The discussion comes at a time when Mbappe is once again among the leading names in the Ballon d'Or conversation. He is one of the 30 nominees for this year's award, with his best previous finish having been third place in 2023.

The latest comments offer a glimpse into how one of football's biggest stars handles the strange realities of modern fame: admiration, parody and criticism often arriving in the same image. For Mbappe, the issue is not simply whether the memes are funny, but whether the joke ignores the historical weight of the figures being invoked.
