Poland fall to Germany in socca World Cup semi-final

Poland’s socca national team will not reach the World Cup final after a dramatic semi-final defeat to Germany. The holders were beaten 3-2 despite leading in the closing stages, ending their bid to retain the title and sending them into the bronze-medal match.

Poland arrived with momentum

Klaudiusz Hirsch’s side went into the semi-final with real belief after a strong run through the tournament. In the group stage, Poland recorded wins over Kosovo, Morocco and Chile, then beat Syria in the last 16.

The quarter-final against Kazakhstan had already shown the team’s resilience. Poland recovered from 2-0 down to score three times in the second half and book a place in the last four, a comeback that appeared to set the tone for another big occasion against Germany.

Elsner strike put Poland ahead

The semi-final began in relatively measured fashion, with neither side applying intense pressure high up the pitch. Poland made the breakthrough in the seventh minute from a corner, catching the hosts off guard. Krzysztof Elsner found space and finished well to give the White and Reds the lead.

After going in front, however, Poland dropped deeper and spent long spells defending. Germany began to create openings and also struck the post, while goalkeeper Krystian Stanecki was called upon to keep his side in front with a series of important interventions.

Germany’s pressure eventually told in the 20th minute when Max Kruse scored from distance. By that stage, the equaliser had been coming.

Second-half response was not enough

At the interval, emotions were clearly running high in the Polish camp. Hirsch urged his players to show more courage in possession, and there was a visible response after the restart.

Poland pushed forward with greater intent and captain Bartłomiej Dębicki had two chances, including one following an effort from Norbert Jaszczak. Even so, Germany remained organised without the ball and continued to pose a threat on the counter-attack.

In the 30th minute, Poland were awarded a penalty after a challenge involving Karol Bienias. The decision was checked, but the referee stuck with the original call. Jaszczak converted to restore Poland’s lead and put them within touching distance of the final.

Late turnaround ends title defence

Just as in the first half, Germany responded strongly after conceding. Poland were unable to hold on as Cekić converted a penalty to level the match once more.

The decisive moment came in the closing stages, when Konstantin Fries scored Germany’s third goal to complete the turnaround. For Poland, it was a painful finish to a semi-final they had led late on.

The result means Poland will not defend their world title. Instead, they will return on Sunday to play for bronze after a campaign that had promised another run to the final.
