Dortmund maintain perfect start as Freiburg go top

Borussia Dortmund kept up their perfect start to the Bundesliga season with a 3-0 home win over promoted Paderborn, only for Freiburg to move above them on goal difference after a 5-0 victory against Borussia Mönchengladbach.

Dortmund make it three in a row

Dortmund’s latest win means three league victories from three matches, their strongest opening to a Bundesliga campaign in 11 seasons, dating back to Thomas Tuchel’s spell in charge.

Fábio Silva, starting alongside Serhou Guirassy for the first time this season, put the home side in front early after finishing a smart pass from the Guinea international. Guirassy also had two first-half goals ruled out for offside, but Dortmund remained in control against a Paderborn side still waiting for their first goal since returning to the top flight.

Felix Nmecha then came off the bench to score twice and put the result beyond doubt, with his second goal arriving via a spectacular late bicycle kick.

Schlotterbeck returns after injury

There was another positive for Dortmund with captain Nico Schlotterbeck making his first appearance since suffering an ankle injury at the World Cup.

Speaking to Sky Germany, Schlotterbeck said he had chosen not to make too much public about his comeback before returning. He said he had missed playing badly, described the injury as serious and added that he was happy to be back.

Freiburg surge to the summit

Freiburg’s emphatic win over Borussia Mönchengladbach sent them to the top of the table. Yannik Engelhardt and Igor Matanovic both scored twice, while Maximilian Eggestein added the fifth in a one-sided contest.

Gladbach’s difficult afternoon was made worse by finishing the match with 10 men, and the defeat left them at the bottom of the Bundesliga standings.

Augsburg slip, Frankfurt get going

Augsburg’s brief spell at the top came to an end after a 2-2 home draw with Bayer Leverkusen. They had started the matchday as leaders for the first time in their history, but were unable to hold on despite Michael Gregoritsch scoring twice.

Eintracht Frankfurt, meanwhile, claimed their first win of the campaign with a 3-1 success away to Mainz. Can Uzun struck twice, either side of Jonathan Burkardt’s goal, while goalkeeper Noah Atubolu saved a first-half penalty from Nadiem Amiri.

That stop extended Atubolu’s remarkable run to six consecutive penalty saves, improving his own Bundesliga record.

Füllkrug scores again for Bremen

Niclas Füllkrug continued his productive return to the Bundesliga by scoring Werder Bremen’s equaliser in a 1-1 draw at Cologne. Thijs Dallinga missed an early penalty before Linton Maina put Cologne ahead, but Füllkrug levelled in the 69th minute.

It was his third goal in four games since returning to Germany, a sharp contrast to more difficult spells with West Ham and on loan at Milan.

Elsewhere, Hoffenheim beat Stuttgart 2-1 at home thanks to two goals from Adam Hlozek. Bayern Munich are due to visit promoted Elversberg on Sunday, while RB Leipzig host Hamburg.
