Merino likens Arsenal teenager Dowman to Lamine Yamal

Mikel Merino believes Arsenal teenager Max Dowman has the mentality to handle rising expectations, comparing the young attacker to Lamine Yamal after his standout display in the Carabao Cup win over Ipswich.

Dowman makes his mark at Ipswich

Dowman continued his progress with two goals as Arsenal beat Ipswich 4-2 at Portman Road to reach the last 16 of the Carabao Cup. It was the 16-year-old's first appearance of the season, and he made an immediate impact in senior company.

The forward has already been given a number of opportunities by Mikel Arteta, and this latest outing only added to the growing attention around one of Arsenal's most highly rated young players. Arteta has acknowledged that keeping a lid on the excitement surrounding Dowman is not straightforward, particularly after a performance of this level.

Merino sees echoes of Yamal

Merino, who also scored against Ipswich, said Dowman reminds him of Yamal, his Spain teammate, because of the way he embraces pressure rather than shrinking from it.

“There are some similarities in terms of their character,” Merino said. “They don’t care about the spotlight. They thrive when pressure is at the highest. They are always up for the challenge and they are not shy at all – even facing the biggest names in the game.”

It is a striking comparison, even if Merino's focus was less on style and more on temperament. In his view, both players share a fearlessness that allows them to perform naturally despite the scrutiny that comes with elite-level football at a young age.

Arsenal's balancing act with a major talent

Merino was emphatic in his praise for Dowman, describing him as a player capable of making a difference even against senior opponents. At the same time, he stressed the need for patience and support as Arsenal manage his development.

“He is an unbelievable talent. We knew it, but every time he goes on the pitch and plays against grown men he makes the difference. He is a big talent and we have to take care of him.

“We have to keep pushing him. He needs to keep learning – eyes and ears open always. There is still big room for improvement in a lot of areas and he knows that. So we are going to be by his side trying to get him to his best level.”

Merino also pointed to the challenge clubs face when a teenager breaks through so quickly. Arsenal want Dowman to express himself, but they are equally conscious of protecting him within the wider demands of a senior squad.

“It is a thin line. It is very difficult to have equilibrium sometimes with him, because obviously you want him to shine and show everyone the talent that he has. But you have to sometimes remind them that they are human beings and they are part of a bigger squad and team.”

Humility highlighted alongside talent

For Merino, one of the most encouraging signs is Dowman's willingness to listen and learn. That, he suggested, is another area where the Arsenal youngster mirrors Yamal.

“The good thing with these kind of players – Lamine and Max – is that they are special talents, but at the same time they are very humble. They are always keen to learn and listen to the veterans. That is priceless.”

Merino also praised 17-year-old Marli Salmon for his display against Ipswich, noting the maturity required to play at centre-back. But the night's main talking point was Dowman, whose first appearance of the season offered another glimpse of why Arsenal are so excited — and so careful — about what comes next.
