Arsenal vs Chelsea: Alonso style under scrutiny before test

Arsenal’s meeting with Chelsea is the standout Premier League fixture of the weekend, bringing together two of the four teams still on maximum points. The champions have yet to concede a goal, while Chelsea arrive as the division’s joint top scorers, setting up an early-season test with real significance.

Chelsea’s strong start has come with a debate

There is no doubt Chelsea have made an eye-catching opening to the campaign. Their results have matched the scale of attention around the club after another expensive transfer window, with total Premier League spending rising above £3.4bn by Deadline Day and Chelsea responsible for £340m of that on 13 players.

Beyond the spending, the early performances have stood out. Chelsea are one of four sides with a perfect record and their attacking play under Xabi Alonso has clicked quickly. Wins over Fulham and Brighton were described as thrilling, but they were also chaotic, underlining both the promise and the uncertainty in this new version of Chelsea.

Fluency in attack, questions without the ball

At their best, Chelsea have looked sharp, direct and highly effective in possession. After two rounds, they are the league’s joint-highest scorers with seven goals, with five of those coming in the first half. Their front three have been particularly influential in setting the tone early in matches.

But the wider picture is more complicated. In both of those wins, Chelsea conceded the majority of open play. Brighton restricted them to 25 per cent possession, the club’s lowest share on record in a Premier League game, while they had only 38 per cent against Fulham.

That contrast is what makes Alonso’s Chelsea so intriguing. They have shown they can do major damage in limited spells on the ball, especially through quick transitions, but they have also allowed opponents long stretches of control. For a side with ambitions at the top end of the table, that balance will inevitably be examined closely.

Alonso’s view on possession

Alonso has made it clear that he does not place much value on possession figures in isolation. After the win over Brighton, he said the data was not important and insisted he does not frame matches around hitting a particular percentage of the ball.

That stance may be understandable in the short term if the results continue, but the numbers remain striking. A possession share as low as 25 per cent is unusual for any Premier League side, let alone one expected to compete near the top. As Jamie Carragher noted on Monday Night Football, it is not something usually associated with the biggest teams in the league.

Why Arsenal provide a significant measure

This is why the trip to Arsenal feels so relevant, even at this early stage. Arsenal have combined perfect results with defensive authority, not conceding a goal so far, while Chelsea’s attack has been among the most productive in the division.

The game should offer a clearer indication of whether Chelsea’s current model can hold up against elite opposition. Alonso built his reputation at Bayer Leverkusen on an effective use of the ball, and many expected a similar identity to emerge at Chelsea. Instead, the early signs suggest a team prepared to surrender control and trust its speed and precision in transition.

That approach has delivered wins and goals. The question now is whether it can also provide the consistency required to compete at the very top of the Premier League. Against Arsenal, Chelsea have a chance to show that their explosive start is built on more than early-season momentum.
