Schedule & Fatigue
BasketballWho comes in rested, and who plays a second night in a row or straight after a cup game? Both teams' schedules and how they have historically moved the result — with a handicap pick.
What the Schedule & Fatigue module shows
A result depends not only on form but on the calendar: a team playing its second game on consecutive days, coming back from a long road trip or from a European cup game is in a different spot from an opponent that has rested. For every game of the day the module shows both teams' schedule — days since the last game, games in the last week and fortnight, the road trip, a game in another competition and the next game ahead.
Where the schedule changes the result in a measured way, we add that effect to the projection from form and set it against the bookmakers' handicap. The list starts with the games the schedule moves the most; the details show both teams' games from two weeks before to a week after the game and their results by days of rest.
What we actually measure
We checked every game from July 2023 to September 2026: how far the result strayed from the projection from form when one team had a tight schedule. In the NBA a back-to-back against a rested opponent matters: home teams then lose 3.0 points on average, away teams 2.0 (434 and 472 games). In other leagues a team that played in another competition up to four days earlier — most often a European cup — does better than its league form: home teams by 2.4 points, away teams by 2.9 (over 1,100 games in each group).
Both effects held in both halves of the period. Rest alone — one or three days off without a game in another competition — did not change the result measurably outside the NBA, so we do not add it, although we show it in the schedule.
How to read the pick
The pick is the market's handicap on the side the schedule helps — and only when the projection from form with the effect added points that way against the bookmakers' line too. Bookmakers know line-ups, injuries and — especially in the NBA — back-to-backs, so we read the historical rate from the projection moved three quarters of the way to the market's handicap. Differences are therefore small, and we say so.
The handicap includes overtime, as bookmakers settle it. At the start of a season the form comes from the previous one, so we flag such games and move them to the end of the list.
Frequently asked questions
- What is a back-to-back in basketball?
- A team's second game on consecutive days. In the NBA every team plays a dozen or so of them a season; fatigue and travel then cost 2–3 points against the form on average if the opponent rested. In Europe games on consecutive days are rare.
- Does a European cup game weaken a team in its league?
- In three seasons of data it is the other way round: a team that played in another competition up to four days earlier does 2.4–2.9 points better in its league than its form suggests, if the opponent had no such game. We show it as a measured effect, not as a rule for every game.
- Why does not every game have a pick?
- A pick appears only where the schedule changes the result in a measured way, bookmakers have set a handicap and the form with the effect added points the same way as the schedule. In the other games the schedule is background — for a handicap pick, see the Handicaps module.
- What does Premium unlock?
- Without Premium you see today's games with both teams' schedule and part of the list. Premium adds the day's top 3 with a pick, every game of every day, effect and pick filters, sorting by value, a form window of up to 30 games, teams' results by rest and prices on both sides of the handicap — in one Premium together with football.
