Patchy evidence behind Trent Alexander-Arnold England recall

Thomas Tuchel has brought Trent Alexander-Arnold back into the England squad, making clear that the defender will be considered in his natural role on the right. The difficulty is that there has been little this season to offer a firm verdict either way. His opening weeks at Real Madrid have been fragmented, and the evidence for a recall remains limited rather than conclusive.

Tuchel’s decision comes with limited recent evidence

Tuchel described Alexander-Arnold as having made a good start to the season, but that assessment is not one widely supported by his appearances so far. If the England manager did not feel he had seen enough to take him to the World Cup in the summer, there has not been much since then to dramatically alter the picture.

Alexander-Arnold has had only two league starts, with other appearances coming from the bench and some matches passing without him featuring at all. That does not amount to a compelling case for either selection or omission. It simply leaves uncertainty, and Tuchel has chosen to act in the player’s favour.

Real Madrid role has not fully settled

One of Alexander-Arnold’s most notable outings came against Inter, when he started in midfield rather than at right-back. The decision was shaped by absences elsewhere, but the experiment did not appear to convince. Afterwards, José Mourinho acknowledged the demands of midfield differ from those of full-back, pointing to the distinct physical and positional requirements of the role.

That appearance should not count against Alexander-Arnold’s England prospects if Tuchel intends to use him on the right side of defence. Even so, it added to the sense that his place and function at club level are still being worked out rather than firmly established.

A bright moment against Málaga, but little momentum after

There was one performance that hinted at a more convincing case. Against promoted Málaga, Alexander-Arnold completed the full match and produced the kind of display that underlined his strengths in possession. He saw plenty of the ball, completed more passes than anyone else, created two chances and supplied Kylian Mbappé for Madrid’s third goal in a 4-0 win.

It was the sort of outing that encouraged talk of a fresh start. His passing range and accuracy stood out, and for a moment it looked as though he might build momentum. But that promise has not yet developed into a sustained run.

Questions remain over consistency and defensive assurance

Since that encouraging display, Alexander-Arnold’s involvement has again been uneven. He came off the bench against Real Betis and later remained unused against Rayo. Against Elche, he started but was withdrawn late in a game in which Madrid surrendered a two-goal lead before being rescued by a late winner.

Across six league matches, the pattern has been stop-start: two starts, two substitute appearances and two games missed. Denzil Dumfries, signed in the summer, has started more often at right-back in both the league and the Champions League. That alone suggests Alexander-Arnold is not yet an automatic choice at club level.

The broader concern is that the old debate has not disappeared. His quality on the ball remains obvious, but the doubts around his defensive work have not been fully eased by the matches he has played. Tuchel may believe the player can still offer England something important from right-back, yet the available evidence this season is patchy. For now, the recall looks more like a vote of trust than a decision backed by a strong body of recent form.
