Arsenal fight back to beat Chelsea in London derby

Arsenal recovered from an early blow to beat Chelsea 2-1 at the Emirates Stadium in one of the first major fixtures of the new Premier League season, extending their perfect start after three matches.

Early shock for Arsenal

The home side had opened the campaign with wins over Coventry and Aston Villa, while Chelsea arrived after high-scoring victories against Fulham and Brighton under new head coach Xabi Alonso. That set the stage for an intriguing meeting in north London.

Chelsea struck almost immediately. From a free-kick in the second minute, the ball broke kindly for Morgan Rogers, who hit a first-time low finish beyond David Raya. It was the first Premier League goal Arsenal had conceded this season and gave Chelsea the ideal start.

Arsenal responded with urgency. Riccardo Calafiori thought he had levelled in the 12th minute, only for VAR to rule the goal out for offside. Even so, the home side kept pushing and eventually found their equaliser midway through the first half.

Havertz leads the response

Kai Havertz brought Arsenal back into the contest in the 25th minute. Cutting in from the right, he drove a powerful effort into the near corner to beat Emiliano Martinez and make it 1-1.

That goal shifted the momentum, although Chelsea still carried a threat on the break. Before half-time, Pedro Neto went close to restoring the visitors' lead when he struck the post, a warning that Arsenal could not afford to lose control of the game.

At the interval, the contest remained finely balanced, but Arsenal had already shown the character that has underpinned their strong opening to the season.

Odegaard completes the turnaround

The second half began in ideal fashion for Arsenal. Christos Tzolis broke down the left and delivered into the area, Havertz cleverly let the ball run, and Martin Odegaard arrived unmarked to finish. The goal put Arsenal ahead in the 50th minute and completed the comeback.

From there, Arsenal continued to threaten, particularly from set-pieces, though Chelsea managed to withstand several dangerous moments. The visitors also looked for a route back into the match and created openings of their own.

Estevao tested Raya with a powerful effort, but the Arsenal goalkeeper reacted well to turn the shot over the bar. That proved to be one of Chelsea's best chances in the closing stages as no further goals followed.

What the result means

The victory leaves Arsenal with nine points from three Premier League matches and in second place, behind Manchester City on goal difference. City have a superior goal record of 7:2 compared with Arsenal's 6:1.

Chelsea, meanwhile, remain on six points and sit fourth after a match in which they started brightly but were ultimately undone by Arsenal's response. For Arsenal, this was another early statement in the title race; for Chelsea, it was a reminder that encouraging attacking form still needs to be matched by control in the biggest games.
