Chelsea midfield concerns grow after Arsenal expose gaps

Chelsea’s defeat to Arsenal highlighted a familiar problem: promise going forward, but too much space and too little control in midfield.

Chelsea midfield concerns grow after Arsenal expose gaps

Chelsea’s first defeat under Xabi Alonso offered a sharp reminder of where his new side still falls short. For all their attacking intent at the Emirates Stadium, Arsenal’s superiority in midfield proved decisive, exposing the lack of balance in a team still adjusting to a more aggressive approach.

Alonso’s approach brought ambition but also risk

Chelsea did not arrive with a plan to retreat. Alonso made clear he wanted his side to be proactive, and there were moments when that ambition was evident. Chelsea continued their habit of starting quickly, taking an early lead through Morgan Rogers and creating further openings in a game played at high speed.

Yet the willingness to engage Arsenal on those terms came with an obvious downside. Chelsea looked dangerous on the break, but they also looked vulnerable whenever Arsenal played through the middle. Alonso’s vision is becoming clearer: this is a side built to attack with speed rather than dominate the ball. The problem, at least for now, is that the structure behind it remains fragile.

Caicedo absence leaves Chelsea short in key area

The biggest issue was in central midfield, where Chelsea were missing two important profiles. Enzo Fernández has departed for Manchester City and was not replaced, while Moisés Caicedo was absent again because of an unspecified issue. Against opponents as strong and complete as Arsenal, that shortage was impossible to ignore.

Caicedo’s absence in particular looked damaging. His energy, defensive coverage and ability to protect the back line would have been valuable in a game where Arsenal repeatedly found room between the lines. Chelsea can live with some chaos if they are clinical and compact enough at key moments, but without Caicedo they lacked the player most capable of restoring order.

Alonso has taken a cautious line over the Ecuador international’s fitness. Caicedo has not started this season, having missed the win against Fulham and then been withdrawn shortly after coming on in the victory over Brighton. Alonso has indicated there is no long-term issue, but he has also acknowledged that Caicedo was brought back too quickly once already and does not want to repeat that mistake.

Arsenal found the spaces Chelsea could not close

Arsenal’s edge in the middle of the pitch was reflected in the way they turned the game. Declan Rice drove through central areas too easily at times, and Chelsea were punished again when Martin Ødegaard broke forward to score after Reece James lost track of him.

That moment also highlighted another complication for Alonso. James is being used in midfield, a move that began under Enzo Maresca, but he is still adapting to the demands of the role. Alonso clearly trusts his captain, yet this was a game that showed how different central midfield is from full-back, especially against elite opposition.

Alongside James, Roméo Lavia started but faded after an hour. The Belgian is still working his way back after injury problems and has not yet completed a full match since joining Chelsea three years ago. When Alonso turned to his bench, he replaced Lavia with Malo Gusto, leaving Chelsea to finish with two converted right-backs in central midfield.

January cannot come soon enough

Chelsea’s squad-building issues were laid bare by the circumstances. The club explored midfield replacements for Fernández, with Alex Scott among the targets, while Adam Wharton, Manu Koné and Lamine Camara were also of interest. None arrived, and Chelsea now have to manage with what they have until January.

There is enough in Alonso’s early work to suggest Chelsea will trouble teams. They attack with purpose and carry threat in transition. But they have also conceded seven goals in three games and have not kept a clean sheet in the league since January. Until the midfield is reinforced, or Caicedo returns fully fit, the sense may remain that Chelsea are exciting but incomplete.
