Hull earn deserved point at Chelsea after Belloumi double

Hull’s strong start to the Premier League season gathered further momentum as Sergej Jakirovic’s side claimed a deserved 2-2 draw at Chelsea, where Mohamed Belloumi’s first-half double put the promoted team on course for a notable result before João Pedro rescued a point for the hosts.

Hull punish Chelsea’s defensive lapses

There was little about Hull’s display that suggested a side merely hanging on. They were organised, aggressive and ready to exploit the uncertainty in Chelsea’s defending, particularly during a first half in which the visitors repeatedly exposed the home side’s lack of control without the ball.

Chelsea had started brightly and moved in front early on through Morgan Rogers after a swift counterattack, with João Pedro providing the pass in the build-up. Xabi Alonso’s side looked capable of taking charge at that stage and Pedro Neto also tested Konstantinos Tzolakis as the home team tried to build on their lead.

Yet the game shifted when Hull began to target moments of hesitation in Chelsea’s back line. A long clearance caused problems, Ryan Giles won the duel on the left and his delivery to the far post was seized upon by Belloumi, who finished decisively after Jorrel Hato misread the bounce.

Hull’s confidence grew from there. Another attack from the left unsettled Chelsea again, and after a warning sign when Lewie Coyle was denied by Levi Colwill’s goal-line intervention, the visitors completed the turnaround from a corner. Emi Martínez failed to deal cleanly with the cross, Semi Ajayi hit the bar, and Belloumi reacted quickest to score his second with a first-time effort that took a deflection on its way in.

Chelsea dominate the ball but struggle for control

This was the first time Chelsea had controlled possession so heavily in a league match this season, but it brought limited fluency. Alonso had altered his setup, leaving out Maxence Lacroix in central defence and switching from a back three to a 4-2-3-1, though the change did not provide the balance he wanted.

For long periods, Chelsea’s attack was contained and their defending remained vulnerable. Hull protected their lead with discipline after the break, with Ajayi and Nobel Mendy particularly important in dealing with the stream of crosses into the area.

Reece James went close from a free-kick, forcing a save from Tzolakis, but Chelsea found it difficult to create clear openings in open play. Their frustration was evident as Hull slowed the tempo where possible and continued to defend with conviction.

João Pedro responds after key turning point

Hull were not only defending. They almost moved further ahead when Regan Slater’s effort was mishandled by Martínez, who recovered to block Oli McBurnie on the rebound. It proved a significant moment in the contest.

Shortly afterwards, Chelsea found their equaliser. Cole Palmer injected urgency, driving forward down the left before cutting the ball back into a dangerous area. João Pedro met it with a rising finish to bring Chelsea level and prevent a damaging home defeat.

There was also concern for Hull during the second half after a clash of heads involving João Pedro and Mendy, with Lucas Herrington introduced after Mendy was forced off. Even so, Hull maintained their intensity and saw out the closing stages for a result that reflected the quality of their performance.

What the draw means

For Hull, this was another statement that their early-season form is no accident. Jakirovic’s team showed they can do more than defend deep against stronger opponents; they carried a threat, won key duels and looked fully capable of troubling Chelsea throughout.

For Chelsea, the draw underlined familiar issues. Their attacking players eventually found a route back into the game, but the defensive fragility remains a concern. Conceding twice from avoidable situations and extending a winless home run against promoted sides will do little to ease the scrutiny on Alonso’s side.
