Why does a match have no referee statistics?

Either the referee has not been announced yet — appointments often arrive a day or two before kick-off — or the referee has too few finished matches with data for the selected minimum. Lower the minimum-matches filter to include shorter histories.

Do cards from the whole history count, or only this season?

The profile uses the referee's most recent matches regardless of season — the window you choose (5 to 30 matches) sets how many. Referees change little between seasons, so recent form matters more than the calendar.

Are penalties in a shoot-out counted?

No. Only penalties awarded in play count towards the referee's penalty average; a penalty shoot-out that decides a cup tie is excluded, as are matches where the penalty data is clearly incomplete.

What the referee statistics show

Every referee has a pattern. Some let the game flow and finish with two or three cards, others book the first late tackle and average five or more. The module takes each referee appointed to today's fixtures and builds a profile from their most recent matches: cards per match, yellow and red separately, home and away split, fouls called and penalties awarded.

The profile is built only from matches that finished before the match day, so a number you see before kick-off is the same number you would have had at the time. Matches decided on penalties are left out of the penalty count — a shoot-out is not a decision the referee made.

How to read the ranking

Pick the metric — total cards, yellows, reds, fouls or penalties — and the direction. Over sorts the day's referees from the strictest down; under from the most lenient up. The minimum-matches filter hides referees whose profile rests on too few games, and the match window (5 to 30) decides how far back the profile looks.

Each card shows the referee's average next to the over/under cards line their history supports best and how often it landed. Open a match to see the full profile, the O3.5, O4.5 and O5.5 hit rates, and every match behind the numbers.

Using it with the cards markets

Referee behaviour is the piece the team statistics miss. Two disciplined sides can still produce six cards under a strict referee, and a derby can pass quietly under a lenient one. Check the referee's average against the cards line the bookmaker offers and against the two teams' own card averages from the Cards module.

Treat it as one input, not a verdict. A referee with twenty matches at 5.2 cards per match is a strong signal; one with six matches at 6.0 is a small sample. The match count and the last-match date are shown for exactly that reason.
